About This Role

What you'll do

This is a night shift role at a large academic medical center and level one trauma hospital in Nashville, TN. You'll be preparing patient tissue specimens for pathologists to examine under a microscope. It's a high volume lab, so things move.

You'll take tissue out of preservative solution, remove the water from the sample, and replace it with paraffin wax. Then you embed the sample in a larger block of wax to get it ready for slicing on a microtome. After that comes sectioning, staining with special dyes, and mounting on glass slides. You're also expected to calibrate, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain the equipment.

The work requires dexterity and good hand eye coordination. Lab safety and infection prevention matter here ; every single day.

What you need

  • An Associate or Bachelor's degree ; or 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) from a regionally accredited college or university ; with at least 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of combined biology and chemistry
  • HT/L(ASCP) certification
  • Or you can be on the job trained or non certified per the lab's approval
  • You must be legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship

Skills that matter here

  • Experience receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic analysis
  • The ability to perform complex histologic procedures and recognize when results deviate from what's expected
  • Troubleshooting problems using scientific principles from your NAACLS training and years of experience
  • A steady hand for handling delicate samples and equipment
  • A serious commitment to lab safety protocols

The pay & benefits package

Salary range is $40,000–80,000 depending on experience.

  • Health insurance plus vision and dental coverage
  • Paid time off (PTO)
  • Employer paid life insurance ; they cover your premium for basic life coverage; details are available during onboarding if you want something more customized; it's simple: they take care of that piece so you don't have to worry about it from day one; just ask them about supplemental options when you get there; they'll walk you through everything then; no pressure either way ; but that base policy is paid by them completely regardless of what else you pick up later down the line.
  • A retirement plan through their system ; start putting money away early; they help match some of it too once eligibility kicks in after probation period ends usually around 90 days depending on hire date so keep an eye out for that notice when onboarding materials come through because timing matters here honestly more than people realize until they miss a window accidentally ; but HR sends reminders before each enrollment period opens twice annually anyway which helps catch anyone who spaced it out somehow still happens though sometimes even with reminders believe me I've seen it before many times over twelve years doing this work now actually;
