What you'd be doing
You're the bridge between surgery and discharge. Your main focus is on acute post op care, managing everything from pain to potential complications. It's a role where your assessment skills and proactive coordination directly shape a patient's recovery.
- Maintain aseptic sterile technique according to AORN and ASPAN standards.
- Assess patients' physical and psychological status post operatively.
- Deliver interventions and manage pain to support recovery.
- Anticipate case specific needs using your knowledge of surgical procedures and pathophysiology.
- Coordinate discharge planning with the healthcare team and patients' families.
What you need to have
The non negotiables are pretty standard for this specialty, but they're strict on the certification timelines. Make sure your credentials are in order or that you're ready to get them quickly.
- A current Registered Nurse license.
- A diploma from an accredited nursing school or your required professional licensure.
- BLS Provider certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. You need this within 30 days of starting.
- Advanced Life Support certification (AHA or ARC). This one's required within 6 months of hire.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification (AHA or ARC), also required within 6 months.
