The Role

Mastec Civil, LLC is a heavy highway contractor that's been around since 1987. We build the roads and bridges that connect people. Right now we're hiring a Senior Estimator to help grow our infrastructure market in Florida. This position is remote within the state of Miami, FL.

What You Will Actually Do

This isn't a desk job in isolation. You'll be deep in the numbers and the plans, working with everyone from executives to field crews. Here's the breakdown of what that looks like day to day:

  • Understand bid items and the basis of estimate; catch errors and discrepancies in plans and specifications before they become problems.
  • Read and interpret plans, specifications, RFPs, RFIs, addendums, and technical special provisions.
  • Build green sheet estimates, break down activity structures, create construction schedules, and run risk matrix analysis.
  • Create job budgets for contracts we win.
  • Understand bid strategy and identify cost savings initiatives.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs that are accurate and on time.
  • Estimate an entire job on your own when needed.
  • Review estimating reports: equipment hours, labor productivity rates, key indicators, equipment balance analysis.
  • Stay current on Florida DOT Standards and Specifications as they change.
  • Review the full bid submittal package and lead estimating discussions with company executives.
  • Get clarifications on plans and specs from the owner or engineer of record.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to get quotes on different scopes of work.
  • Analyze supplier and subcontractor pricing.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Have a complete understanding of unit cost analysis.
  • Attend pre bid meetings and bid submittals.
  • Keep up with commodity trade prices.
  • Track new construction technologies and techniques.
  • Maintain continuing education ; attend engineering conventions, forums, and the like.
  • Stay in regular communication with field personnel (project engineers, superintendents, foremen, fleet managers) to track and adjust unit costs as work progresses.

What You Need To Bring

We have hard requirements. No shortcuts on these:

  • A minimum of 10 years of estimating experience in Heavy Civil Construction.
  • At least 3 years of field experience in Heavy Civil Construction, specifically roadway work: earth movement, drainage, clearing and grubbing, grading, roadway bases, channel excavation, retaining walls, water main, force main, and similar.
  • You must live in Florida.
  • A B.S. in Engineering or Construction Management.
  • 30 Hour OSHA training.

And then there's the knowledge side. You need to know:

  • Bridge and roadway construction.
  • Florida soil ; rock and clay, foundations, concrete structures, temporary structural systems, underground and utility work, earthwork, signalization, roadway lighting and signing, intelligent transportation systems, safety standards.
  • Design build and design bid build contracts with Florida DOT and Turnpike Enterprises.
  • Contract delivery methods: design build, design bid build, Lump Sum.
  • Contract experience with Florida DOT/turnpike, cities/counties, and airport authority.

You also need to be the kind of person who collaborates with peers, teaches younger engineers, and constantly looks for problems to solve. Self motivation is not optional here.

What You Get
