About This Role
Job Overview
This Painter role in Memphis, TN is about more than just rolling paint on walls. You'll be handling prep work, applying finishes, and making sure every surface looks clean and professional. The work tends to be hands on, project based, and you'll often move between residential or commercial sites depending on the employer. It's a skilled trade that calls for patience and a steady hand; speed comes with practice, not shortcuts.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Surface preparation. Scraping, sanding, patching holes, and taping off trim. If the prep is bad, the finish shows it.
- Paint application. Using brushes, rollers, and sprayers to apply primer and paint evenly. You'll work on ceilings, walls, and sometimes exterior siding.
- Color mixing and matching. Blending tints to hit the exact shade a client wants. Sometimes you'll need to match an existing color by eye.
- Cleanup and maintenance. Washing tools, storing equipment, and protecting floors and furniture with drop cloths. A messy worksite slows everyone down.
- Minor drywall repairs. Filling small cracks or dents so the final coat sits flat. Larger repairs usually go to a drywall specialist.
Requirements
- At least one year of professional painting experience. Newer apprentices are sometimes considered depending on your previous labor background.
- Comfortable with ladders, scaffold planks, and reaching awkward angles for trim work. You'll be on your feet most of the shift.
- Ability to lift and carry buckets of paint (often 40–50 pounds) and move equipment around job sites.
- Reliable transportation to get to various job locations within the Memphis, TN area. Some sites don't have public transit access.
- Basic knowledge of paint types: latex vs. oil based, primer purposes, and sheen levels (flat, eggshell, satin, semi gloss). No need to be a chemist, but you should know what works where.
What It's Like in This Role
You'll work in crews of two to four painters, sometimes solo on smaller jobs. The atmosphere is practical and task focused; everyone knows their part. You'll use standard gear like roller cages, extension poles, and 5 in 1 tools. Most projects run 1–3 days, but larger commercial builds can stretch for weeks. Deadlines matter, but rushing the wrong step costs more time later. Expect some early starts, especially in warmer months, to beat heat and drying times.
Why You'll Like This Opportunity
You get to see real results at the end of every job. A room looks different. A house feels new. There's variety in the work; different colors, different surfaces, different clients. If you're good, repeat work and word of mouth referrals come naturally. Many contractors offer flexible scheduling, and you can often pick up extra hours when projects stack up. For those who want to grow, lead painter or foreman roles open up after a few solid seasons.
Schedule & Work Type
Full time and part time shifts are common, typically Monday through Friday with occasional weekend work if a project runs tight. Most work is onsite at the client's property, so you won't be remote. Some employers offer seasonal work (spring through fall), while others run year round with interior projects during winter. Shift lengths are usually 8 to 10 hours.
