HVAC Service Technician – Memphis, TN
Upchurch has been around since 1970, and we're a growing company that does mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work across the Southeast. We handle everything from design and installation to ongoing maintenance and emergency support for buildings that can't afford downtime. In this role, you'll support mission critical data centers in Memphis, TN and elsewhere, keeping their cooling systems running reliably.
What you'll actually be doing
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain CRAC and CRAH units, chilled water and glycol systems, DX/split systems, RTUs, pumps, heat exchangers, VFDs, and associated controls.
- Perform preventive maintenance, start ups, and commissioning checks. Verify operation against manufacturer specs and site SLAs for temperature, humidity, and hot aisle/cold aisle containment.
- Handle refrigeration procedures ; recover, evacuate, weigh in charge, check superheat and subcooling. Run leak and pressure tests and document all readings.
- Do basic electrical troubleshooting on HVAC equipment: contactors, relays, motors, capacitors, control circuits (120–480V, single phase and three phase) while sticking to code and site rules.
- Work with BMS/EMS systems to monitor trends, alarms, and setpoints. Coordinate with facility ops during maintenance windows, make control changes, and execute LOTO.
- Use mobile work order software to document diagnoses, parts used, labor hours, photos, and recommendations in real time. Keep dispatch, project managers, and customers informed.
- Support on call rotations and show up for after hours/emergency response when scheduled.
- Follow safety procedures every day ; LOTO, arc flash awareness (NFPA 70E), fall protection, confined space, rooftop safety. Keep your job sites and vehicles clean and organized.
- Mentor junior techs and interact professionally with customers and vendors.
What you need to bring
- At least 2 years of commercial or industrial HVAC service experience. Data center or mission critical work is a big plus.
- EPA Section 608 certification ; Type II or Universal.
- Strong troubleshooting skills in refrigeration and air systems. You should be comfortable reading schematics, wiring diagrams, and O&M manuals.
- Comfortable using laptops, tablets, digital gauges, and mobile work order apps.
- A valid driver's license with an insurable driving record. You'll need to fly or drive nationwide frequently.
- Physically able to lift 50 pounds or more, work at heights and on rooftops, and handle seasonal temperatures in mechanical spaces.
Nice to have
- Previous data center experience with CRAC/CRAH units, chilled water plants, and white space operations.
- OSHA 10 certification (or willingness to get it within 30 days).
- Familiarity with BMS platforms like Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Trane, or Schneider.
- NATE certification. Experience with chillers, boilers, hydronics, and VFDs.
- Basic understanding of UPS/generator interfaces and change management windows.
