What This Role Is About
This Data/Financial Analyst position supports West Fraser's capital planning process. You'll work directly with mill operations leaders and project managers to track capital projects from start to finish. It's a role where your analysis directly influences spending decisions and project effectiveness.
What You'll Actually Do
- Partner with mill operations leaders to keep capital project lists current and update project statuses
- Help develop long range capital plans across the business
- Liaise with project managers to track project progress, collect and process commitments, actual costs, forecasts, and changes from procurement, construction, planning, engineering, and estimating teams
- Analyze project spend variances between budgets and forecasts, then inform project management ; including operations leaders and finance teams ; about cost trends and recommend appropriate actions
- Produce month end capital reporting, including major capital reports and analysis
- Support capital project development and review work, including budgets and payback analysis
- Work with project managers to make sure post implementation reviews happen on time and project effectiveness gets measured and reported
- Consult with operations and project managers on capital versus expense determinations, asset class verification, asset disposal and write offs, internal asset transfers, and annual property tax reporting
- Maintain the Approved for Expense (AFE) documentation process
- Support the accounting team so month end close and general accounting tasks are completed accurately and efficiently
- Tackle special projects and other duties as they come up
What You Need to Bring
- A bachelor's degree in finance or accounting
- A graduate degree in business, finance, or a related field is preferred
- 5 years of related experience
- Solid understanding and working knowledge of accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls
- Strong skills with finance, project management, and reporting technology ; plus the ability to learn new tools quickly
- Strong research and analysis skills
- Ability to adapt fast and learn new tasks independently
- Excellent organization skills
- Comfortable communicating and training peers on new processes and approaches
- Ability to manage competing priorities without dropping the ball
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with enterprise project management suites, Oracle EBS, and BI reporting is considered an asset
