What the Job Is

This is an RN position in our ICU. You'll be the primary nurse for your patients over 12 hour shifts, organizing and directing their care based on the Watson Model. It's about providing high quality, individualized care that's centered on the patient and their family.

You're expected to understand and actively support the hospital's mission and values in everything you do.

A Day in This Role

Your day revolves around using your clinical judgment to anticipate needs and solve problems. You'll assess patients, recognize subtle changes, and adjust care plans accordingly. Prioritizing and organizing that care is on you; you make sure the planned care actually happens.

  • Apply research findings and critical thinking to every clinical decision.
  • Build a therapeutic relationship with each patient and respect their rights throughout their stay.
  • We conduct hourly rounding on all patients.
  • Communication uses the SBAR format for every hand off situation.
  • Your documentation covers assessment, the interdisciplinary plan of care (IPOC), implementation, and evaluation, following all unit policies.
  • A big part of your focus is on patient comfort, using different methods to manage physical and psychosocial needs.
  • You help patients and families feel in control and participate in recovery.
  • Identify what patients need to learn about their health and use the right resources to teach them.
  • Work directly with Care Managers during a patient's stay. You'll also help coordinate discharge planning across different disciplines.
  • Review all patient orders and communicate any condition changes to the physician and team members.
  • Call the physician promptly for significant changes, collaborate on new orders, and follow up with revised care plans.
  • Evaluate how well nursing interventions are working and document those outcomes in the IPOC.

The Team & Environment Stuff

This isn't just about direct patient care. You're part of keeping the whole unit running smoothly and safely.

  • You'll plan, supervise, instruct, and evaluate ancillary staff, floats, new orientees, and registry personnel on your shift.
  • A shift evaluation is required for any registry or float staff you work with.
  • We uphold a professional appearance per our dress code. Wearing your hospital ID badge is mandatory; you'll also help ensure your peers are properly identified.
  • Maintaining a safe, clean environment that meets all regulatory standards; including Patient Safety Goals; is everyone's job.
  • You'll participate in our unit specific quality improvement work. That means completing monitoring forms and reporting what you find to the Clinical Unit Supervisor and Nurse Manager.
