Emergency Room RN

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this ER RN role at Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. I've been placing nurses here for a while, and their ED is a serious place that needs serious clinicians. This isn't a gig for someone who's just looking to clock in and out. You need to be sharp, proactive, and genuinely invested in the model of care they use.

What You'll Be Doing

You're the Registered Nurse responsible for your patients over a 12 hour shift. That means you own it: organizing, planning, directing, and coordinating high quality care. You'll use the Watson Model of Care as your guide, which really focuses on the individual patient and family.

  • Your nursing process has to be on point. You're using your experience to anticipate needs before they become problems.
  • Assessments need to be focused and efficient, targeting what matters most for each patient.
  • Catching subtle changes in a patient's condition is crucial; you'll evaluate those changes and adjust the care plan without delay.
  • You're accountable for prioritizing care and making sure the planned care actually happens.
  • Communication runs on SBAR for every hand off situation. No exceptions.
  • Documentation covers everything: assessment, plan, implementation, evaluation. You'll follow unit specific policies to the letter.
  • A big part of this is hourly rounding with a purpose. It's not just a check box.
  • You'll work directly with Care Managers on discharge planning from day one, taking a proactive role in coordinating that process.
  • Reviewing all patient orders and communicating any condition changes with physicians and the team is a daily routine.
  • You'll provide basic hygiene and help with activities of daily living (ADLs) for your patients.
  • The job includes supervising and evaluating ancillary staff, floats, orientees, and registry personnel when needed.
  • Flexibility is non negotiable. Patient census dictates movement; you need to be ready to transfer locations throughout your shift if required.

The Specifics We Need From You

The requirements here are clear cut. They're not looking for "similar" experience; they need exactly this background.

  • A minimum of one year of clinical nursing experience specifically in an Emergency Department setting is mandatory. Not med surg with some ED exposure. One full year in an ED.
  • The education baseline is an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), a Nursing Diploma, or an equivalent qualification.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) gives you an edge; it's listed as preferred but not required at entry.

The Professional Stuff

This hospital has a mission and core values they take seriously. They expect you to understand them and participate actively in fulfilling that mission through your work every day. You’ll support their strategic plan and get involved in quality improvement activities specific to your unit. A professional appearance is part of it; adhering to the dress code and always wearing your hospital ID badge. The expectation is that you’ll grow here too by participating on committees or cross training into different roles within the department.

A Few More Details

The hospital reserves the right to modify job duties or assign additional duties as needed.
