Cardiac Sonographer
About This Role
What you'll do as a Cardiac Sonographer here
You'll perform a wide range of advanced cardiac ultrasound investigations. That means using pulsed and continuous wave Doppler, color flow mapping, and tissue Doppler imaging to get clear, detailed heart images. You'll also set up electrocardiography (ECG) equipment, attach electrodes to patients' chests, operate and adjust the equipment, record cardiac data and measurements, and help protect patients during their exams.
Your day to day responsibilities
- Perform adult transthoracic, 2D M mode color flow Doppler echocardiograms, pharmacological and nuclear stress testing, and stress echocardiograms.
- Assist with transesophageal (TEE) echocardiograms.
- Do standard and complex measurements and quantification techniques to an accurate, reproducible level. Independently issue preliminary clinically diagnostic findings at a highly specialized professional standard.
- Prepare for exams by checking physician orders for specific procedures, equipment, and supplies. Review patient schedules, set up recording equipment, and enter patient information into the system.
- Reduce patient anxieties by explaining procedures and answering their questions.
- Position and apply electrodes or conductive gel as needed.
- Connect leads from the electrocardiograph, echo, or stress equipment to electrodes on the correct body areas.
- Review each patient's record and give them instructions before their procedure.
- Monitor patients during procedures and report any abnormal findings.
- Identify and correct for wandering, interference, and artifact in tracings.
- Edit and forward results to the attending physician for analysis and interpretation.
- Maintain ECG, echocardiography, and stress equipment and supplies.
- Other duties within scope, as assigned.
What you need to qualify
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalency. You also need completion of a program related to sonography with emphasis on echocardiography, or equivalent on the job training.
Experience: At least 2 years of experience performing echocardiograms. If you have less than 2 years experience but hold an associate degree level completion and at least 6 months experience, you'll still be considered.
Certifications: You must be credentialed with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS). Here's an alternative: if you're a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) and have 5 years of experience performing cardiac sonography, that will be considered in place of ARDMS certification.
