About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this Plant Mechanic role at CalPortland in Las Vegas, NV. It's not a desk job. You'll be the one keeping everything moving, from crushers to conveyors, making sure the plant runs and runs safely.
What you'll do
The core of it is keeping the plant's fixed equipment running. That means inspections, repairs, and preventing problems before they happen.
- Perform safety and mechanical inspections on crushing plants, screens, conveyors, and all the support systems.
- Diagnose issues and make repairs. You're troubleshooting hydraulic, mechanical, and pneumatic systems to minimize downtime.
- Conduct preventative maintenance. That includes lubrication, fluid changes, screen replacements, belt adjustments, and checking components.
- Replace parts as needed: bearings, rollers, pumps, motors, hoses, cylinders, even structural components.
- Assist with bigger projects like plant rebuilds or major shutdown maintenance.
- You'll operate equipment too; loaders, excavators, haul trucks; to support operations or move materials for cleanup.
- Communication is part of the job. You'll talk with supervisors and operators about repair timelines and equipment needs.
- Complete detailed maintenance logs and work orders every day. Pre shift and post shift checks are standard.
- Housekeeping matters. Keeping your workspace clean and organized is a daily task.
- This isn't always at one site; you'll drive to various facilities for maintenance tasks. Some work might be at ready mix plants too.
The tools & environment
You need to bring your own set of tools typically used for aggregate facility maintenance. The company provides the big stuff; you bring your box. And you've got to be ready for the physical side of things; lifting up to 100 lbs., working in all weather conditions (extreme heat or cold), and driving on rough terrain. Climbing, bending, stretching… it's all part of a day's work here.
The schedule
The hours can be long and the shifts can vary. You need to be available for extended hours or variable shifts when they're needed to keep things going.
A few more details about the role
- Follow MSHA rules and our company safety policies without exception. Lockout/tagout procedures aren't optional; they're how everyone goes home safe.
- Participate in safety meetings and training programs when they happen.
- Report any safety hazards or equipment concerns immediately; no waiting around on that stuff.
- The manager might assign other duties as needed; flexibility helps here.
The background we need
A high school diploma or GED is required. A valid driver's license is non negotiable. We're looking for someone with 2 5 years (or more) as a plant mechanic or in a very similar role.
