About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this Oncology RN position at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. I've been recruiting for these roles for over a decade, and this is a solid unit. They're looking for someone who gets it; this isn't just med surg with chemo. You'll be working with hematological malignancy patients, the ones receiving bone marrow transplants. It's complex, demanding, and incredibly meaningful work.
The Work You'll Do
You're the primary nurse. That means you own the assessment, planning, and evaluation of your patients' care plans. You'll coordinate everything to make sure they get the best possible outcome.
- Providing direct patient care and supervising support staff within your scope.
- Your day involves specialized procedures like chemotherapy and biotherapy administration; you'll handle investigational protocols too.
- Managing blood product transfusions; platelets, fresh frozen plasma, the whole range.
- Caring for patients with radiation implants, central lines, and spinal drains is part of the routine.
- You'll assist with or perform bone marrow biopsies and aspirations.
- Other procedures include thoracentesis, paracentesis, and managing epidural or intrathecal analgesia pumps.
A huge part of the job is patient and family education. You're teaching them about their condition, their treatment, what to expect next. You tailor that support to their age, culture, and specific situation; it's not a one size fits all script.
What You Need to Bring
The non negotiables first. You must have a current RN license in your state. Your basic nursing education needs to be from an accredited program; a Registered Nurse Diploma or degree works.
- You need a Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification. They require you get it within your first 30 days if you don't have it already.
- An Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is also required. You have up to 6 months from your start date to obtain it.
- The big one for this specialty: you must have completed the ONS Fundamentals of Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration course or be willing to get it quickly. This isn't optional; it's core to the job.
The Schedule & The Place
This is a full time position at Research Medical Center. It's a major facility; over 585 beds; with a wide network behind it as part of HCA Healthcare. The unit itself is focused on comprehensive cancer care, from diagnosis through survivorship. You're joining one of the largest employers of nurses in the country, which comes with some real advantages for growth and education.
