About This Role

What you'll be doing

This is a boots on the ground, tool in hand position. You'll work in the shop repairing refuse vehicles. Your main focus is inspecting, maintaining, and repairing all company owned vehicles and equipment, including rolling stock. That means you're keeping everything safe and running efficiently.

  • Diagnose and repair operational issues with heavy duty diesel trucks and equipment.
  • Maintain and repair heavy diesel, CNG, gas, and electrically operated equipment and vehicles.
  • Complete reports, work orders, order parts, and handle other daily administrative duties.
  • Plan and schedule repairs in the M5 planner, and procure all parts needed.
  • Review mechanical write ups on equipment and help coordinate the repair schedule.
  • Make sure working conditions are safe and comply with all safety regulations.
  • Use a variety of power and hand tools and equipment.
  • Keep, provide, and maintain your own tools necessary for heavy and hydraulic equipment repairs.
  • Keep a clean work area.
  • Follow all federal, state/provincial, and local laws, along with company policies and supervisor directives.
  • Assist in training and orienting new employees.
  • Stay up to date with the latest technology using technical manuals and attending training seminars and testing.
  • Provide daily functional direction to other mechanics as needed.
  • Take on other duties as requested by management.

What you need to bring

  • High school diploma or GED. A technical diploma is a nice plus, but not required.
  • At least one year of experience as a diesel mechanic.
  • Experience using diagnostic software is a plus.
  • You're computer literate and willing to learn new software systems.
  • You need to meet criteria for safety sensitive functions per company standards.
  • You can communicate effectively and follow detailed instructions.
  • You work well independently and keep accurate records.
  • You can read and understand repair and parts manuals written in English.
  • You can operate any vehicle or equipment needed for the job.
  • You have the physical ability to handle all aspects of the role.

Physical demands and work environment

This job requires you to stand, sit, walk, use your hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, taste, and smell. You'll need continuous mental and visual attention. Your vision must cover close work, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Expect frequent physical effort handling tools and equipment, and you'll regularly lift, push, or pull up to 100 pounds.

The work environment is usually loud. You'll be exposed to loud noise, humidity, hot and cold weather, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles. Occasionally you might work in high, precarious places.

Schedule and pay

Starting pay is $30 per hour or more, based on your experience and qualifications. The starting shift is 3pm to 11:30pm, Monday through Friday. Overtime kicks in after 40 hours worked.
