
About This Role
The Opportunity
This is an Operations Manager role at Forward Air in "Kansas City, MO". They're offering $85,000 a year for a Tuesday through Saturday schedule, 12pm to 10pm. You'd be leading the dock operation, supervising dockworkers and support personnel, and reporting directly to the Terminal Manager. They want someone career oriented who can handle a busy, high volume shipping environment.
What You'll Do Day to Day
- Make sure all dock work matches Forward Air's approved procedures, standards, and specifications
- Keep the operation compliant during audits across every area
- Dig into terminal operating reports and tweak labor schedules to boost efficiency
- Create onboarding strategies for hiring, training, and keeping good people around longer
- Focus on employee development through cross training and D.R.I.V.E. reviews
- Handle daily asset reporting for trailers, forklifts, TAP Scanners, load bars, and containers
- Manage day to day operational needs professionally and on time
- Drive the KPIs the Terminal Manager sets for you
- Supervise all dockworker and support personnel activities around loading and unloading trucks and trailers
- Assign job tasks based on the unloading and loading schedules
- Make sure load plans are solid and loads are balanced for safe vehicle operation
- Coordinate work assignments, keep an eye on performance, and train people on their job duties
- Maintain a clean, safe work environment for everyone, including visiting customers
- Oversee safe handling, loading, unloading, and storage of Hazardous Materials per DOT rules
- Frequently lift or move up to fifty pounds and occasionally lift or move up to ninety pounds
- Other duties as they come up
What They're Looking For
- Five or more years of supervisory experience in a high volume, fast paced transportation environment
- Prior air freight experience is required
- International or import experience is a plus
- You understand P&L statements and know how to analyze areas for production improvement
- You can drive performance in your direct reports and lead a team in a lean manufacturing setup
- Solid leadership ability you've already demonstrated
- Knowledge of proper freight handling techniques
- Knowledge of Hazardous Materials handling
- You communicate effectively with everyone in operations
- Willing to work various shifts and days per week, including weekends and nights
- Forklift and general freight handling experience
- General computer skills with Microsoft Office, Outlook, and AS400
- Good problem solving skills
- A "can do" attitude and a "will do" work ethic
