About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this job. It's for an Equipment Operator at our yard in Kansas City, MO. This isn't a desk job. You're outside, you're moving, and you're running the machines that keep freight moving. If you like hands on work where you can see what you've accomplished at the end of the day, this could be a good fit.
The Work
You'll be operating heavy equipment to handle shipping containers. Think top loaders, side loaders, cranes, and hostlers. Your main task is moving these containers on and off railcars and trucks, stacking them in the yard, and making sure everything gets where it needs to go.
- Driving hostlers to position containers and chassis around the facility.
- Using cranes and loaders to stack and organize containers safely.
- A big part of your day is doing pre- and post shift inspections on your equipment.
- You'll coordinate with other folks in the yard to keep things flowing smoothly.
- Following safety rules isn't just a suggestion here; it's how we do everything.
What You Need to Bring
We'll teach you how to run the machines if you're new. But there are some non negotiables we need from day one.
- A valid driver's license is mandatory. We can't consider your application without it.
- You have to pass our pre employment checks: a background verification, a physical, and a drug screen.
- The Federal Rail Administration runs a tight ship on safety. Cannabis use is strictly prohibited for this role.
- The job is outdoors in all weather. You need to be okay with that.
- It's physical work. You should be able to lift up to 50 lbs and handle climbing ladders and stairs on and off railcars.
- Your schedule has to be open. We operate every day, so we need people who can work weekends or evenings when required.
If You Have This Experience, Even Better
Don't worry if you don't; we have paid training for apprentices. But if you've done this kind of work before, it helps.
- Previous experience running heavy machinery in a logistics or industrial setting is a plus.
- Experience specifically in an intermodal or rail yard is great.
- Familiarity with container handling equipment like hostlers or top loaders is valuable.
- A CDL or any equipment certifications are nice to have but not required to start.
