About This Role

What You'll Do

You're the person running the day to day operations on your assigned unit. That means you're overseeing professional nursing practice, making sure everything runs smoothly from morning to night. You'll handle hiring and firing of nursing staff, conduct employee evaluations, and get new hires oriented and up to speed. Performance improvement is a big part of the job too.

You own the cost center budgets for your unit. You'll supervise RNs, Patient Care Associates, Clerical Associates, and other clinical support staff. If there's an Assistant Nurse Manager in place, you'll coach and mentor them as part of succession planning.

Qualifications You'll Need

Education

Required: A Bachelor's degree. For new hires starting after August 1, 2013, you must have a BSN from an accredited school of nursing.

Preferred: A Master of Science in Nursing.

Experience

Required: At least 1 2 years of management or demonstrated leadership experience in a clinical setting (or the equivalent). Plus 3 5 years of clinical experience in an acute care setting (or the equivalent).

Preferred: Minimum of 3 years clinical experience with increasing responsibilities. You should also have a working knowledge of hospital operations, including how patient placement and nurse staffing work. A track record of building interdisciplinary teams and solid working relationships is key.

Licensure and Certifications
  • You must be licensed to practice nursing in the state of Florida.
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Effective January 1, 2015, all new hires or transfers need a professional certification within two years of starting. For certifications that depend on a specific number of cases or hours in the specialty (like oncology, chemotherapy, or diabetes education), you must apply once you meet the requirement, and you have one year from that point to get certified.

Skills That Matter

  • You work well with a team and communicate professionally with everyone on the healthcare team.
  • A willingness to learn new methods, procedures, and techniques when the department or organization changes direction.
  • You adapt quickly to change and adjust your approach when needed to hit goals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • You can function independently without constant oversight.
  • Demonstrated management skills, conflict resolution, and negotiation techniques.
  • You're familiar with the Collective Bargaining Unit Contract requirements.

Supervision and Patient Population

This role has supervisory responsibility for about 100 employees. The patients you'll care for span all age groups.
