Maintenance Technician

UniFirst·Indianapolis, IN

About This Role

Hey there. I'm putting this listing together for a spot on the maintenance crew at UniFirst in Indianapolis, IN. We need someone who gets their hands dirty fixing things. It's a Monday through Friday gig, but you should know up front that overtime comes up sometimes, nights and weekends included.

The Work

You'll be the one keeping our industrial equipment running. That means repairs, maintenance, installations, and figuring out why something stopped working.

  • Use all kinds of tools; hand tools, power tools, precision measuring gear, and electronic testers.
  • Your main focus is keeping machinery safe. You'll work on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Follow blueprints, schematics, operation manuals, and engineering specs to get the job done right.
  • Troubleshoot problems by observing equipment and using those precision testing instruments.
  • The boilers and wastewater system need you too. You'll run chemical tests, log the results in books or on a computer, and make adjustments when needed.
  • Do daily and weekly safety checks on the boilers and fix any issues you find.
  • Keep an eye on utility meters. Record them, analyze the readings over time, and take action if something's off.
  • General location safety checks are also part of your routine every day and week.
  • Maintenance tasks like inspecting motors and belts, checking fluid levels, replacing filters; all according to our procedures.
  • You'll also inspect, clean, and lubricate parts like shafts, bearings, and gears.
  • A Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is how we track everything; you'll be using it.

What You Need to Bring

This isn't an entry level "no experience" role. We need someone who already knows their way around a shop floor. Here's the checklist:

  • A high school diploma or GED is required. A two year technical degree is a nice bonus if you have it.
  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • A valid driver's license with a safe driving record is non negotiable.
  • You need knowledge of maintenance equipment in general.
  • At least six months of hands on experience repairing industrial processing equipment in a production environment is required. If you got that experience in the military? That absolutely counts.
  • There's a maintenance knowledge assessment test. You have to pass it to be eligible for hire here.
  • The ability to read blueprints and schematics is required.
  • You must be able to read and understand maintenance literature printed in English.
  • Basic computer skills are needed; think Microsoft Office level stuff. Lockout / Tagout experience isn't just preferred; it's required.

A couple other realities: The schedule might require overtime when we're busy. And some parts weigh up to 80 pounds; you've got to be able to lift them safely when needed.
