About This Role
The Role
A construction materials supplier in Indianapolis, IN is hiring a Loader. You'll be the person who gets the shingles, lumber, and other building supplies onto the roof, not just off the truck. It's a physical job, and it's an outdoor job. You'll work closely with a driver, running deliveries to residential and commercial sites.
This isn't a warehouse gig. You're out in the field, using a conveyor system to lift bundles of material onto rooftops. You'll follow the roofing contractors' specs and protect the customer's property while you work. Safety isn't optional here; it's built into every step.
What You'll Be Doing
- Loading and unloading roofing materials from delivery trucks, using both your hands and mechanical equipment. You handle everything with care to prevent damage.
- Setting up scaffolding and other structures at job sites. You're also inspecting equipment and reporting any problems.
- Getting materials onto both flat and sloped roofs, following safety guidelines to protect the workers and the property.
- Running a conveyor belt to move materials from the truck bed to the roof, keeping a steady flow so the project stays on schedule. You'll only operate the conveyor after you're trained and certified.
- Double checking the material orders. You're the one who confirms the right quantities are loaded and delivered, and you keep paperwork on everything.
- Answering questions from the roofing contractors and making sure their material needs are met. It's a service role as much as a labor role.
- Following OSHA rules and company safety protocols. That means wearing your PPE at all times.
- Coordinating with the driver and the rest of the team to keep the loading and unloading process smooth.
- Checking the delivery site for hazards before you start, and helping the driver back into tight spots.
Where You'll Work & Travel
You report to a Site Supervisor or Manager. No one reports to you. You'll travel locally within the branch delivery area most days, using company vehicles. On rare occasions, you might have overnight travel (less than 10% of the time) to help out at a nearby branch or support emergency storm relief. They'll give you advance notice.
The Physical Side of the Job
This is a role for someone who's physically fit. You'll regularly lift and handle materials up to 100 lbs. You'll be standing, walking, bending, climbing, and working on roofs at various pitches. You need good balance and you have to be comfortable at heights. You'll wear a harness and other PPE every day. You'll also use a computer for basic communication and tasks from time to time. If you need a reasonable accommodation to do the job, just ask.
Schedule & Environment
You're outside and on rooftops most of the time, rain or shine. You'll wear a hard hat, safety harness, and gloves. The work week is Monday through Friday with early start times. Sometimes you'll work overtime or a weekend shift if the delivery schedule demands it. You'll deal with loud machinery noise, so staying focused and communicating clearly is essential.
What You Need to Bring
- Your own reliable transportation to get to work.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. without needing visa sponsorship.
- A clean enough background to pass criminal and driving checks, and a clean drug test.
- Real physical strength. You need to be able to lift 80 to 100 lbs repeatedly and correctly.
- Basic math skills for counting inventory.
- Good English communication, both spoken and written, so you can work with the team and read job documents.
- A solid understanding of safety, including knowledge of OSHA guidelines.
