About This Role
Alright, let's get straight to it. This is a Laborer position with Messer Construction in Indianapolis, IN. It's not glamorous office work; you'll be on site, using your hands, and getting the job done. Messer's been around since 1932 and is employee owned, which means the people doing the work have a real stake in the company's success.
What you'll do on site
The work changes with the phase of the project, but it's always hands on. You're a core part of the crew that makes things happen.
- You'll handle general and final cleanup to keep the site safe and organized.
- Distributing power tools, extension cords, and generators; then cleaning them up after use.
- Setting up water pumps and hoses for dewatering.
- Manually moving formwork, lumber, rebar (resteel), and other materials around the site.
- Hand excavation, backfilling, grading sub base material by hand.
- Placing vapor barrier and board insulation.
- Placing and tying rebar.
- Placing concrete; whether it's from a truck chute, a pump line, a bucket, buggy, or conveyor. Then raking it out, screeding it flat, edging it cleanly, or giving it a broom finish. Operating vibrators to consolidate concrete is part of this too.
- Curing concrete with blankets when needed.
- Tearing down formwork after concrete sets; then cleaning and oiling those forms so they're ready for next time.
- General demolition work: taking out masonry walls, drywall partitions, ceilings of all types. You'll use jackhammers, air tools, sledgehammers; whatever gets the job done safely.
- Operating cutoff saws and cutting torches for demo or material prep tasks.
The basics we need from you
A few non negotiables here. If this sounds like you so far, keep reading.
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
- You need at least three years of experience working on commercial construction sites. We're talking buildings; not residential houses or small remodels.
