Pharmacy Technician

About This Role

About the Role

This isn't a standard pharmacist job. It's a residency program at Houston Methodist in Houston, TX. You'll spend a year in an organized, postgraduate training program designed to build your skills in rational drug therapy for both general and specialized patient populations.

The work is fundamental clinical pharmacy. You'll help facilitate safe, effective, and cost conscious medication use. You'll support pharmacy protocols, formulary processes, and medication reconciliation. A big part of the role involves educating other pharmacists, nurses, doctors, and staff inside and outside the department.

There are also administrative duties, quality projects, and research activities baked into the program requirements. Satisfactorily complete the year, and you'll receive a certificate of residency.

The position is exempt under FLSA guidelines.

What You Need to Bring

  • A graduate degree from an accredited College of Pharmacy. If you're a Foreign Pharmacist Equivalent Graduate recognized by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, that works too.
  • You must be able to provide transcripts if requested during your application.
  • Zero years of experience is fine; some hospital setting experience is highly preferred though.
  • A Texas Pharmacist license (PHRM) or eligibility to obtain one within 90 days of starting.
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association within 90 days.
  • ACLS certification from the American Heart Association within 90 days.
  • PALS certification from the American Heart Association within 90 days.
  • An IV Certification would be a plus.

The Day to Day Work

Working with People:

  • You contribute to a positive, team focused environment where people actually help each other hit department goals.
  • Collaboration with other healthcare pros is key for solving problems and meeting patient goals.
  • You'll serve as a preceptor and mentor for pharmacy students. That means completing evaluation forms and helping set their rotation schedules.

Service & Patient Care:

  • Your core duty is providing fundamental pharmacotherapy management. Think proactive drug therapy reviews, monitoring patients, offering drug information, counseling patients, and managing pharmacist based dosing protocols.
  • You need sound judgment in patient care decisions. Documenting your care activities and how your interventions impact patient outcomes is part of the job.
  • Serving as a guest or member on Medical Staff committees is expected. You'll actively work on committee goals there too.

Quality & Safety:

  • A major focus is collaborating to manage patients' drug therapy. You're looking at effectiveness, side effects, adverse reactions, toxicities, interactions, and incompatibilities. And you follow all formulary management guidelines...
