About This Role

The Role

This is a full time Paramedic position in the MRI Department at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital in Houston, TX. You'll work three 12 hour shifts each week, 7:00am to 7:00pm, on a repeating two week matrix schedule. Week 1 you work Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Week 2 you work Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

As a Paramedic here, you're not just running calls in the field. You're working inside the Imaging Department, assisting with patient care for a diverse patient population. You'll perform EKGs and collect lab specimens under the direction of a licensed nurse or provider. You'll handle patient care activities of daily living within your defined scope and the unit's specific limits. You also conduct hourly rounding to make sure patient needs are being met, record data according to policy, and report observations or problems to the licensed nurse or provider. This role follows the Patient and Family Centered Care model in line with Houston Methodist Experience standards.

What You'll Need

You need a High School diploma or equivalent (GED, homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post secondary education, etc.). You also need completion of an EMT A, EMT Paramedic program, or a licensed Paramedic credential. If you're currently in an EMT to Paramedic program and classified as an EMT Advanced, that works too.

Six months of pre hospital experience or six months of hospital experience as an EMT or Paramedic is required.

Licenses and Certifications

You must have one of these:

  • LP - Licensed Paramedic (State Licensure)
  • EMT A - Emergency Medical Technician Advanced (State Certification)
  • EMT P - Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (State Certification)

And all of these:

  • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (American Heart Association)
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (American Heart Association)
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (American Heart Association)
  • NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (Crisis Prevention Institute)

Skills and Abilities

You'll need the skills and competencies to perform the job safely, determined through ongoing assessments and evaluations. That includes sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English, especially for anything affecting patient or employee safety. You need to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers using a customer service focus and positive language. Judgment matters in interactions with the interprofessional care team. Time management is important, and you should be able to adapt to multiple priorities with minimal supervision, including organizing workflows and problem solving. You need to access information in the department and hospital system to support the interprofessional healthcare team. Competent computer knowledge is required, including electronic health records like Epic, plus Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel). You must perform basic EKG interpretation and apply knowledge of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act.

How You'll Work with People

You'll function as a team member, responding willingly when colleagues need help or partnership. Promote a positive work environment with the interprofessional care team. Problem solve, assist other techs, and manage several ongoing priorities with minimal supervision. Serve as a role model using critical thinking in several capacities, including mentoring new EMTs and ancillary personnel on unit procedures, roles, and readiness as team leader in patient decontamination operations. Interact with peers, staff, and physicians in a supportive and respectful manner. Encourage open communication for mutual understanding. Your communication to promote work efforts and resolve problems should be clear and professional. Collaborate with all members of the interprofessional team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patient care information clearly and on time. Serve as an educational resource for unit competency and validation procedures applicable to your role. Contribute to department scores for employee engagement on the unit based scorecard through peer to peer accountability.

Patient Care Focus

Role model patient and family centered care standards and provide direct patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse or provider. Provide care to a diverse patient population. Perform basic clinical procedures including EKGs, lab specimen collection, vital signs, and point of care testing. Prepare patients for exams, monitor restrictive devices, and assist with transporting patients as needed. Scope of practice is determined by the state's Medical Practice Act, Texas Board of Nursing rules, and Houston Methodist policies. Respond to medical emergencies throughout the hospital within the Paramedic scope of practice. Recognize and respond to emergencies by staying current on unit based IV starts, monitoring, and other skills. Communicate with the interprofessional team regarding changes in patient status and document care in the Electronic Medical Record. Contribute to department scores for patient satisfaction on the unit based scorecard through peer to peer accountability.

Quality and Safety

Follow safety standards, including those for safe patient handling and movement. Report near misses and document per hospital policy. Participate in unit projects and shared governance activities. Ensure equipment is maintained and ready for use. Follow infection prevention standards, standard precautions, and hospital hand hygiene. Contribute to department scores for quality and safety on the unit based scorecard.

Finance and Operations

Use resources efficiently and avoid waste. Report low supply levels to the appropriate person. Take action to reduce or correct supply waste. Contribute to department scores for finance on the unit based scorecard.

Growth and Development

Participate in departmental projects and activities. Complete required continuous training and education, including department specific competencies. Attend staff meetings. Contribute to department scores for growth and development on the unit based scorecard.
