About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this OR Charge Nurse spot at Houston Methodist Willowbrook in Houston, TX. It's a full time, Monday through Friday day shift position. You're not just running a room; you're helping run the floor. The job is as much about leading people and developing your team as it is about direct patient care. If you're an experienced RN who's ready to step up into that mentor and coach role, this could be a really good fit.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll provide nursing care for a diverse patient population, which means the usual assessments, assisting with exams and treatments, and keeping those medical records accurate. But the charge part is where it gets interesting. You're the go to clinical resource on the unit, and sometimes for the whole hospital. You'll coordinate education in partnership with management.
- Coach and mentor your department staff in their clinical skills and professional practice.
- Lead by example with how you communicate; compassionately; with physicians and the entire interprofessional team.
- Take on leadership responsibilities that start at the bedside but extend across the unit, service line, and institution.
- You'll lead unit activities and shared governance initiatives.
- A big part of the job is assessing what your unit needs to improve practice.
The Essentials We Need From You
First things first: you need to be a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in Texas. If you have a compact license, that's fine to start, but you've got to get your permanent Texas license within 60 days if you're establishing residency here. You also need your BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
- A graduate from an approved nursing education program.
- At least two years (24 months) of clinical nursing experience under your belt.
- We need to see that you've been growing your leadership skills during that time.
- A Magnet recognized certification from the ANCC? That's preferred and would definitely make your application stand out.
The Skills That Make It Work
This isn't just about checking boxes. We need someone who can juggle it all safely and effectively. Your assessment skills should be sharp; you'll contribute to policies and protocols based on what you see. You've got to be proficient in English for all activities impacting patient or employee safety.
- Strong organizational and problem solving skills are non negotiable; you'll constantly prioritize multiple tasks.
- The ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers is key. It's all done with a customer service focus.
- You have to function independently using critical thinking and clinical judgment within the Nurse Practice Act.
- Proficient time management is a must have skill for this role.
- You should know how to navigate the electronic medical record like an expert.
- A working knowledge of your unit’s performance dashboard and HCAHPS scores will be part of your world here.
The Day to Day Impact
A lot of this role is about people. You'll foster staff engagement by listening actively, asking for feedback, making fair decisions, and explaining your reasoning when it matters. Anticipate what your team needs before they have to ask. You're modeling how professionals communicate across disciplines while helping manage stress on the floor.
FLSA Status: Non exempt
The specifics of benefits packages can vary; we encourage candidates to discuss details like health insurance options (medical/dental/vision), retirement plans (like 401(k)), paid time off structures (vacation/sick/holidays), tuition reimbursement programs, or any other company provided perks directly with the Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital recruitment team during the interview process for complete clarity.
