What You'll Do as Logistics Manager in Houston, TX
This is a transportation leadership role with real ownership. You're running the show on safety, service, and cost for the Transportation department in Houston, TX. Every decision you make has to balance all three. You'll spend time in the office working on a computer, but you'll also get out on the road riding with drivers ; that means noise and vibration levels higher than a typical car, so be ready for that.
Your main job is to make sure nobody gets hurt. You'll champion safety procedures, processes, and training to build a culture where safety comes first ; for US Foods associates, customers, and the general public your drivers interact with. That's non negotiable.
You'll directly supervise Transportation Managers and, depending on the location, union or non union transportation associates like dispatchers and clerks, plus routers. You'll indirectly supervise all the drivers. In union facilities, you'll work with HR and the VP Operations to interpret the collective bargaining agreement, handle discipline, settle grievances, and participate in arbitrations when needed.
Responsibilities
- Coach and develop Transportation Managers one on one ; training them on policy and procedure, helping them solve problems, and leading by example
- Work with your managers to address performance gaps among drivers and transportation staff; drive associate engagement and retention
- Build high performing teams by reviewing staffing needs and monitoring the hiring process for transportation personnel
- Review performance, coach to hit safety and service targets, and deliver disciplinary action when necessary
- Monitor production goals with a zero error attitude to keep customers satisfied
- Anticipate, analyze, and troubleshoot delivery problems; come up with cost effective, legal solutions and direct managers on implementing them
- Interpret and ensure compliance with company, state, and federal DOT regulations
- Develop efficient production flow processes to guarantee reliable deliveries; identify process improvements and cost reduction strategies that align with business objectives
- Stop waste wherever you see it and improve processes to get work done more safely and efficiently
- Analyze daily performance measures, find weaknesses, and recommend changes to the VP Operations to hit productivity goals
- Handle any other duties your manager assigns
What You Need to Bring
- At least five years of experience in transportation or delivery supervision
- A broad working knowledge of transportation and delivery operations, methods, and procedures
- Strong leadership and people development skills ; you know how to communicate openly and effectively with everyone in the company
- Solid understanding of DOT, OSHA, inventory control, and other regulatory requirements
- The ability to interpret financial and operational data
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite ; Excel, Outlook, Teams, and the rest
- High school diploma or GED is required; a college degree is preferred
- You'll need to travel about 10% of the time, usually for mandatory meetings and training
Physical Requirements
This job involves a mix of sitting, standing, walking, and driving a vehicle (van or pallet jack). You'll occasionally lift and carry items ranging from 1 pound up to 100 pounds ; nothing over that. You'll also occasionally push, pull, climb, balance, stoop, squat, kneel, bend, reach above shoulder, and twist. You'll frequently need to grasp objects. Manual dexterity and manipulating objects are occasional requirements.
Compensation and Benefits
This role comes with an annual incentive plan bonus of up to 15% of your base salary.
