About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this Director of Nursing role at Houston Methodist Willowbrook. It's a big job, and it needs someone who's ready to lead from the front.
The Role
You're running the show for your assigned nursing units and departments, 24/7. That means you own the quality of care delivered on your watch. You'll be planning, organizing, leading, and evaluating all nursing services within your specialty area. Think strategic direction for nursing and business ops; you're setting the tactical plans for clinical services, launching new programs, and figuring out where people need to be.
A huge part of this is creating an environment where nurses feel empowered to do their best work; care that's effective, compassionate, and knowledgeable. You'll work hand in hand with the Medical Staff to make sure we're always hitting the mark on regulations and accreditation standards.
What You'll Be Doing
- Overseeing department staff activities to ensure quality, productivity, and efficiency hit our strategic goals.
- You're accountable for employee engagement and making sure we have the right staffing levels.
- Developing the budget, then sticking to it.
- Making the tough calls on hiring and employment termination.
- Coaching and counseling your team on their performance.
- Crafting and rolling out policies that keep our work environment both safe and effective.
- Implementing training initiatives that ensure we comply with every ethical, legal, and regulatory standard out there.
- Directing high level projects and processes, either on your own or by facilitating teams to get things done right.
- Providing timely guidance and feedback to help your people grow in the specific skills they need.
What You Need to Bring
- A Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree. One of those has to be in Nursing. If you don't have the Master's yet, you need to be enrolled in a program when you start here and obtain it within two years.
- Three years of experience working in a clinical setting. Two of those years need to include managing people.
- A current RN license from Texas (or a compact license). If you're establishing Texas residency with a compact license, you have 60 days to get your permanent Texas license sorted.
- A Magnet ANCC Recognized Leadership Certification. You've got one year from your start date to get this if you don't already have it.
The Skills That Matter Here
We need a leader who can think critically. You've got to be self directed with sharp interpersonal skills; both talking and writing. You'll be identifying problems, comparing data from all over, developing solutions, and taking action based on the facts at hand.
A deep knowledge of regulatory agency requirements is non negotiable; you have to stay ahead of industry changes. Your communication needs to be top tier for presentations and written reports. This is a fast paced place; flexibility is key. You should be comfortable leading teams, building consensus, and managing a ton of competing priorities under pressure while staying solution oriented. Proficiency in spreadsheets (like Excel), word processors (like Word), and presentation software (like PowerPoint) is part of the daily grind. And throughout it all? A positive attitude matters. Professionalism in handling sensitive information matters just as much. Sufficient proficiency in English is required for all activities impacting patient or employee safety or security. This position is FLSA Exempt.
