Emergency Room RN

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this Clinical Resource Nurse role at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital in Houston, TX. This isn't your standard bedside gig. It's for the nurse who's seen a lot, knows how the whole system works, and is ready to step up into a leadership role that blends direct patient care with program development and staff mentorship. You're the go between for patients, families, physicians, and different hospital departments, making sure care is coordinated and nothing falls through the cracks.

What you'll be doing

Think of yourself as a navigator and an expert resource. Your main job is to guide patients and their families through our complex healthcare system efficiently, specifically within your assigned service line or unit. You'll standardize care processes to improve how things run.

  • Build strong working relationships with physicians and other providers to keep communication about patient care clear and effective.
  • Act as the primary liaison to smooth out patient flow between clinicians, ancillary departments, and patients themselves.
  • Serve as the clinical subject matter expert for the interprofessional team, bringing advanced assessment skills to complex situations.
  • Develop educational materials for the nursing units. You'll also coach colleagues on critical thinking and clinical decision making.
  • Advocate for patients, which includes helping to resolve ethical concerns and addressing spiritual distress for patients and families.
  • Mentor staff to improve communication and teamwork; your role directly impacts nurse satisfaction scores.
  • Coordinate personalized care plans for patients in the specific population program.
  • Educate patients and families on disease specific guidelines so they can be informed partners in treatment decisions.

The essentials you need

The non negotiables are pretty specific here. We need someone with a solid clinical foundation who's ready to lead.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited school is required. A higher degree is great too.
  • You must have three years of hands on clinical nursing experience in an acute care or specialty hospital setting.
  • We need to see some form of leadership experience. That could be as a Charge Nurse, in a Coordinator role, or something similar where you've guided others.

Licenses & certifications

  • A current RN license from Texas is mandatory. If you have a compact license but are establishing Texas residency, you'll need to get your permanent Texas license within 60 days of starting.
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association (or instructor status) is required upfront.
  • A Magnet ANCC recognized national certification (we use HM recognized ones) is also required, but you have up to one year after hire to obtain it if you don't already have it.

The person we need

The skills list is detailed because this job demands a lot. Beyond just checking tasks off a list, we need someone with maturity, judgment, and initiative.

  • Your English language proficiency; speaking, reading, writing; needs to be strong enough to ensure patient safety and clear communication every day.
  • You have to communicate effectively with everyone: patients, doctors, family members, coworkers. A customer service mindset and positive language are key.
  • Strong psychosocial assessment skills are just as important as your clinical skills here.
  • You know your way around community resources and can make smart judgments about when and how to use them or make referrals (even to regulatory agencies).
  • The ideal candidate embodies what we call the Leadership Art & Science of Nursing at Benner’s "Proficient" level or beyond. That means you're not just competent; you see the bigger picture.

A few more things about you

This last bit matters. It's about how you show up.
