The Role

This is a Charge Nurse position at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital in Houston, TX. You're a licensed Registered Nurse who functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model. You create an environment where safe patient care happens, and you do it while still working as a clinical nurse yourself.

You'll be a role model and coach for the department. That means helping develop other people's skills and knowledge, not just doing your own work. You provide nursing care to a diverse patient population, conduct assessments, assist with exams and treatment, and keep medical records straight. But beyond that, you're coaching and mentoring staff in both clinical and professional practice.

What You'll Actually Do

You model compassionate communication with physicians and the whole interprofessional team. This comes with leadership responsibilities at the bedside, on your unit, across service lines, and throughout the institution.

  • Lead unit and shared governance activities
  • Assess unit needs related to practice gaps and improvement opportunities
  • Serve as a clinical resource for unit staff and hospital wide teams
  • Coordinate unit education in partnership with management
  • Foster staff engagement by listening actively, requesting feedback, acknowledging input, making equitable decisions
  • Anticipate what staff members need before they ask; offer help proactively
  • Role model inter professional communication that includes active listening and teaching
  • Help staff manage stress when things get tough
  • Improve departmental scores for turnover and retention on your unit's scorecard
  • Coach staff toward efficient communication that builds team environment including patients and families in care plans
  • Provide input into staff performance reviews when appropriate
  • Function as mentor and resource; oversee students, new employees, preceptorships
  • Identify levels of organizational conflict; apply tools to resolve concerns or complaints with patients, families, physicians, other team members
  • Lead patient centered care initiatives ; that's core to how this works here

Qualifications You Need to Bring

Education & Experience
  • A graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credentials below (RN license)
