GFL Environmental is hiring a Roll Off Driver in Fort Wayne, IN. You'll be the person who shows up, hooks up the container, and hauls waste away. It's a physical job, a driving job, and a customer facing job all at once. Pay starts at $26/hr and goes up to $30/hr, and they're offering a $2,500 sign on bonus to get started.
What You'll Actually Do
- Operate a manual roll off truck and all the ancillary equipment to pick up waste from customer sites.
- Run safety lane inspections before and after each trip, and fill out daily truck reports, route sheets, and any other paperwork your supervisor asks for.
- If the truck has a mechanical issue, you tell the mechanic and your supervisor right away ; no waiting around.
- Keep the route quality where management expects it to be.
- Use proper driving and equipment techniques so you're not the cause of mechanical breakdowns.
- Follow every safety standard and check, plus comply with federal, state, local, and company rules ; including any customer specific regulations.
- Spot a potential hazard with a container? Let your supervisor or lead know before you touch it.
- Keep the truck clean ; inside the cab and outside the vehicle.
- Report any accident or incident to your supervisor immediately.
- Look professional and act professional when you're meeting customers or the public, especially if you're in uniform.
- Wear your PPE at all times: gloves, reflective vest, safety glasses, work boots ; the whole deal.
- Keep accurate records of the services you perform.
- Work with your supervisor to make the route more efficient.
- Show up to safety meetings and branch meetings.
- You might need to work overtime now and then.
- And yes, you'll do other duties management asks of you.
What You Need to Bring
- A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- You must be able to operate a manual transmission ; no automatic restriction on your license.
- At least one year of commercial driving experience, or a CDL school certificate.
- A high school diploma or GED is desired but not required.
- You have to meet the company's criteria for safety sensitive functions.
- You need to prove you can safely drive the truck and operate the equipment.
Skills That Matter
- You can operate any vehicle or equipment the job throws at you, including manual transmissions.
- You can communicate in writing and out loud with other people.
- Basic math? You've got it, and you can apply it to the job.
- You can write simple reports and correspondence ; pre trip and post trip inspections, accident reports, daily paperwork, that kind of thing.
- You can read and understand simple instructions and company policies.
- You follow instructions and work fine with limited supervision.
- Common sense is your friend ; you can carry out written or oral instructions and solve general problems.
The Physical Reality of This Job
- You'll be sitting up to 75% of the time because driving is the main gig.
- But you also need to stand, walk, use your hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.
- Your vision needs to handle close work, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and adjusting focus ; you'll be maneuvering a big truck in tight spots with heavy traffic.
- Regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds. Frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
- It's usually loud out there.
What the Working Conditions Are Like
- You're outside up to 100% of the time. That means heat, cold, rain, storms, and humidity depending on the season.
- You'll be around loud noise, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
- You work on the route away from the branch all day, constantly out in traffic.
- Occasionally you'll work in high precarious places.
- Motor vehicle traffic is a constant factor.
- And yes, it's usually loud.
