About This Role
Job Overview
This role is about keeping people safe. As a Crossing Guard in Fort Bliss, TX, you'll be the person who stops traffic and guides pedestrians across busy intersections. It's a job that demands attention and a calm presence. You're not just standing there; you're making split second decisions that protect children, parents, and commuters. The work happens outdoors, in all weather, and during peak traffic hours. You'll become a familiar and trusted face in your neighborhood.
Duties & Responsibilities
- You'll monitor traffic flow and ensure vehicles stop at crosswalks. This isn't passive ; you need to make eye contact with drivers and use hand signals.
- You'll escort pedestrians safely across the street, especially school aged children. Timing is critical; you have to read the gaps between cars.
- You'll report any hazardous conditions or near misses to the appropriate authorities. If a driver runs a light, you document it.
- You'll assist with traffic control during special events or emergencies. Sometimes that means redirecting cars around a downed power line.
- You'll maintain your assigned intersection. Keeping the area clear of debris and ice can prevent accidents.
Requirements
- You need to be at least 18 years old. Some municipalities require a high school diploma or equivalent.
- You must pass a background check. This is non negotiable when you're around children.
- Good vision and hearing are essential. You can't do this job if you can't see or hear traffic approaching.
- You should be comfortable standing for long periods. Shifts can be two to four hours, and you'll be on your feet the whole time.
- A basic understanding of traffic laws helps, but we'll train you on the specifics. The real skill is judgment under pressure.
What It's Like in This Role
The work is solitary ; you're the only guard at your post. But you're part of a larger safety network. You'll check in with a supervisor daily or weekly. You'll use a stop sign paddle and maybe a whistle. The hours are predictable: mornings before school and afternoons when it lets out. Rain or shine, you're there. It's a rhythm you get used to. You learn the patterns of your street and the habits of its commuters.
Why You'll Like This Opportunity
You get real responsibility from day one. There's no slow ramp up. You'll also see the direct impact of your work ; kids get home safe because you showed up. Many guards work multiple schools and build a flexible schedule that fits around other commitments. Some move into school safety roles or law enforcement later. It's a foot in the door for public service.
Schedule & Work Type
This is an onsite, part time position. Most shifts are early morning (7:00–9:00 AM) and mid afternoon (2:00–4:00 PM), Monday through Friday. Some posts require split shifts. There are no overnight or weekend hours for typical school crossing guard positions.
