ICU RN

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this PICU role at Las Palmas Medical Center in El Paso, TX. I've been recruiting for these specialized nursing positions for over a decade, and this one has some real substance to it. It's not just another bedside job; you're the clinical coordinator. That means you're the hub of the unit.

The Role

You'll be the point person for the Pediatric ICU. Your main focus is making sure every patient's plan of care actually happens, and that means working with everyone; doctors, therapists, other departments. You're the professional role model on the floor, so you're constantly interfacing with patients, their families, physicians, and your own staff.

It starts with assessment. You'll use your physical assessment skills and whatever diagnostic tech is available to figure out what each kid needs. But it doesn't stop there. You keep monitoring their condition, their emotional state, everything. The plan of care isn't static; you're refining it constantly to hit the goals we've set for that patient and for the facility.

And then there's running the unit itself. That's a big part of it.

  • You build and approve all the staff schedules based on our guidelines.
  • Making sure your team gets to their required education? That's on you.
  • You're also the interpreter of hospital policies for doctors, nurses, patients; pretty much anyone who asks.
  • If there's an incident involving a patient or an employee, you handle that report and get it done within 24 hours.
  • Smooth operations mean coordinating daily with other hospital departments.
  • You maintain complete assignment records 100% of the time. No exceptions. And when you make assignments, you match staff skills with patient acuity.

What You Need to Bring

The non negotiables are pretty clear here. They need someone who can hit the ground running in a complex environment.

  • A minimum of one full year of experience as an RN is required.
  • Your education needs to be at least an Associate’s Degree in Nursing.
  • A Bachelor’s in Science in Nursing would be a strong plus; they list it as preferred.
  • For licenses: a current Texas RN license is mandatory.
  • Certifications: You must have Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • You'll also need to get your Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within six months of starting.
