Orkin

Outside Sales Representative

Orkin·Detroit, MI

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this sales role. It's for Orkin, and it's based in Detroit, MI. I've been placing people here for a while, and they're serious about building their commercial team. You don't need to know a thing about pests right now; they'll teach you all of that. What they do need is someone who can get out there, build relationships, and close deals.

What you'd be doing

You're the face of Orkin for businesses in your territory. Your main job is to understand what they offer; the services, the guarantees; and figure out how it solves problems for your customers. You'll be inspecting properties inside and out (they train you on this), listening to what business owners are worried about, and then recommending a plan that makes sense for them.

  • Your day starts with safety. It's non negotiable in everything you do.
  • A lot of it is prospecting for new business and following up on leads they give you.
  • You'll use their marketing tools to find opportunities and schedule visits.
  • After an inspection, you sit down with the customer. You explain what you found, answer their questions, and lay out a solution.
  • They give you an iPad with all the sales software on it. You'll use it to put together agreements and keep your pipeline organized.
  • The goal is to build trust. You're not just selling a service; you're becoming a partner they rely on to protect their business.

What we need from you

The bar to get started is pretty straightforward. They've built their training around bringing in people who know how to sell, even if they don't know the industry yet.

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • You need a valid driver's license.
  • Some sales experience is preferred, but it isn't mandatory.
  • If the state requires a pesticide license or certification, you have to be able to get it. The company pays for this.
  • The job has physical parts to it. You've got to be able to safely use a ladder, occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, and access places like attics, crawl spaces, or rooftops.
  • You're working independently in the field most of the time, going into businesses (and sometimes homes) to meet with customers.

The package

This is where it gets good. They set you up to succeed and reward you for performance.

  • The total compensation range is estimated between $80,000 and $120,000 per year. That's a base salary plus an uncapped commission structure.
  • After training, you get a company vehicle with a gas card.
  • They provide an iPhone and an iPad for work.
  • The benefits are comprehensive: medical, dental, vision, maternity, and life insurance are all included.
  • There's a 401(k) plan with a company match and an employee stock purchase plan.
  • You get paid vacation days; holidays and sick leave are paid too.
  • Other perks include employee discounts, tuition reimbursement opportunities; there are even dependent scholarship awards available.

The bigger picture

A few things that aren't just bullet points: Orkin invests heavily in training. It's award winning stuff designed to make you an expert. The industry itself has staying power; it's considered recession resistant because pest problems don't stop during economic downturns.
