About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this tax role. We're a CPA firm in Des Moines, IA that's been around for a while, and we need someone who knows their way around a complex tax return. This isn't about pushing paper; it's about handling the tricky stuff for a wide mix of clients and helping guide them.

What you'd be doing

You'd be the main point of contact on some pretty involved tax work. That means you're not just preparing returns, you're figuring out what they should say.

  • You'll prepare and review the whole suite: federal, state, and local income tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, and trusts.
  • A big part of the job is digging into research on complicated tax questions to give clients solid advice.
  • When a tax audit notice comes in, you're the one managing it and coordinating with the authorities.
  • You'd help out with tax planning and consulting projects to look ahead for clients.
  • Keeping current on tax law changes and practices is non negotiable; things change constantly.
  • We'd look to you to help develop strategies that make sense for minimizing what clients owe legally.
  • There's an element of teaching here, too; training and mentoring our junior staff members is part of the deal.
  • The bottom line is making sure everything stays compliant with all the federal, state, and local rules.

The background we need

This is for someone who's been in the public accounting world specifically focused on taxes. You've seen a lot of returns by now.

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required. If you have your CPA license or a Master’s in Taxation, that’s a huge plus for us.
  • We really need at least 5 years of experience in public accounting where your primary focus was tax work.
  • You need extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local tax codes. It has to be second nature.
  • Specific experience with S Corps, income tax prep, audits (the tax kind), and general taxation is essential.
  • The problems won't always be straightforward. Strong analytical skills to solve complex issues are key.
  • You have to explain these complex things clearly; both in writing and when talking to clients or the team.
  • The workload has its cycles. Managing multiple projects and meeting tight deadlines is just part of the rhythm here.
  • A sharp eye for detail keeps errors off returns. Being organized keeps everything moving.
  • You should be proficient with standard tax preparation software and the Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel).

The practical stuff

The pay range for this position is $90,000 to $125,000 per year. Here’s how we try to make it a good place to work:

  • The schedule is hybrid remote. You won't be in the office every single day.
  • We offer a 401(k) plan with a company match.
  • Fridays off during the summer months. It’s a nice perk when things are slightly quieter.
  • The health insurance premiums are fully paid by the company for you. And honestly? We try hard to keep it collaborative. People have a say in how we do things around here.
