About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this driving job in Des Moines, IA. It's a Class B route driver position with Clean Harbors. The work itself is physical, you'll be on the road part of the week, and it involves handling materials that need to be disposed of or recycled properly. If you like a mix of driving and hands on labor without being stuck in an office, this might be your thing.
The Work
You're the person who shows up to deal with stuff that can't just go in the regular trash. You'll drive a box truck to retail customer sites; think big box stores, places like that. Your main job is to pick up, pack, and transport damaged goods, discarded inventory, expired products, and recalled items.
A typical stop involves interacting with the store staff, then getting to work: segregating materials, packing them up safely, and loading your truck. You're also responsible for recycling things like light bulbs, oil, oil filters, and other fluids.
- Prepare all the required DOT shipping paperwork for what you're hauling.
- Use a company issued laptop, printer, handheld device, and iPhone to manage tasks and documentation.
- Make sure every job follows the site specific rules; that means federal, state, and local regulations plus our own health and safety plans.
- Final check everything before it ships. You need to verify drum counts and ensure they're in shippable condition according to our policies.
- Understand any special disposal or packaging instructions each customer has.
- Safely operate your vehicle following all DOT and company requirements.
And yes, there's general labor involved. You've got to be okay with heavy lifting over 50 pounds for loading and unloading.
The Schedule & Travel
This isn't a standard home every night local route. There's travel throughout Iowa involved; about 25% of the time. Some weeks you might not travel at all; other weeks it'll be more extensive based on what's needed.
You can expect to be out of town 2 or 3 days during those travel weeks. But you are home every weekend. The company covers your hotel stays and provides a per diem when you're on the road.
What You Need To Have
- A valid Driver’s License is mandatory from day one.
- You need a Class B CDL. An automatic transmission restriction is fine.
- If you don't have them already, you must be eligible to obtain your Hazmat and Tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire; the company pays for this training.
- The ability to use technology: a laptop, handheld device, printer, and iPhone are all required tools for the job.
- You have to pass a background check, drug test, and physical exam.
- This position requires using a respirator at times. Per OSHA standards (29 CFR 1910.34), that means you must meet specific facial hair standards to ensure a proper seal.
It Helps If You Have
- Previous commercial driving experience is a big plus.
- Any kind of route driving experience is helpful too.
- A background in manual labor or similar physical work will serve you well here.
The Pay & Benefits
The recruiting pay range for this role is $23-$27 per hour; where you land depends on your experience (DOE).
