About This Role
Job Overview
This is a hands on role for someone who takes pride in making vehicles look their absolute best. As an Auto Detailer, you'll handle everything from quick interior clean ups to full exterior paint corrections and ceramic coatings. It's a detail focused job where your work is the final product customers see and feel. You'd be working out of a professional detailing facility or automotive service center in the Des Moines, IA area.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform thorough interior detailing: vacuuming, shampooing carpets and upholstery, cleaning all surfaces, and treating leather or vinyl.
- Execute exterior wash, clay bar treatment, polishing, and waxing to restore paint clarity and protection.
- Use specialized tools like dual action polishers, steam cleaners, and extractors to achieve showroom quality results.
- Inspect vehicles for defects before and after service, noting any issues for the customer or service manager.
- Manage your time effectively to complete jobs within scheduled windows while maintaining high standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace, properly storing all chemicals and equipment.
Requirements
- A genuine interest in cars and an eye for the small stuff; a smudge on the glass or a missed spot in a cup holder matters here.
- Some experience with detailing techniques is helpful, but we can train someone with the right attitude and work ethic.
- A valid driver's license with a clean record is often required for moving customer vehicles on site.
- The physical side is real: you'll be on your feet most of the day, bending, reaching, and lifting equipment up to 50 pounds.
- You need to be comfortable working with various chemicals while following all safety data sheet guidelines.
What It's Like In This Role
The shop environment is active. You'll usually have your own bay or dedicated space but will coordinate with other detailers on larger jobs or when things get busy. The pace varies; some days are booked solid with back to back appointments, others might focus on one or two intensive restoration projects. You're trusted to manage your process from start to finish. The tools are professional grade; you'll learn how to use machines that correct paint swirls and steam systems that sanitize interiors deeply. Most shops provide all supplies; you just bring the focus.
