Pediatric ICU RN

About This Role

Here is the rewritten job description for the Pediatric ICU RN role at HCA HealthONE Rocky Mountain Children's in Denver, CO.

The Job

This is a Pediatric ICU nursing position at HCA HealthONE Rocky Mountain Children's in Denver, CO. You're working with a team that's using SPOT Technology to detect sepsis earlier than any human can, running stroke response times nearly half the national average, and cutting opioid use through an Enhanced Surgical Recovery program. That's the level of care we're delivering.

As the pediatric critical care nurse, you're a full partner on the healthcare team. You independently apply the nursing process and own the outcomes for your patients. That means managing complex assignments that match your skill level, building consensus when there's conflict in patient care, and having real conversations with families about advanced care planning, values, and end of life choices.

You'll also evaluate alternative approaches to creating a healing environment. And when something isn't working, you problem solve around it ; especially when it comes to making care safer and more centered on patients and families.

What You'll Actually Do

  • Use evidence based practice daily: you'll generate clinical questions, find and evaluate research quality, weigh expert knowledge against patient preferences, then apply it all to your work
  • Catch when policies or procedures need updating ; then speak up about it
  • Serve as the go to person for safety concerns on your shift
  • Analyze errors productively and help design better systems so they don't happen again
  • Work with QI data at the unit level: review initiatives, integrate them into individual plans of care, contribute to improving healthcare quality overall
  • Assert your perspective during discussions about patient care and the work environment ; but also support other people's positions when they make sense
  • Build your own development plan as a team member alongside department leaders
  • Apply leadership skills that actually support collaboration across disciplines (including virtual teams)
  • Follow all regulations from regulatory and accrediting bodies ; no exceptions
  • Tackle other duties as they come up; this list isn't exhaustive

The Competency Domains You Need to Cover

The role demands solid knowledge across eight competency domains: Patient and Family Centered Care, Evidence Based Practice, Safety, Continuous Quality Improvement, Teamwork (including virtual), Informatics (using technology appropriately), Professionalism (showing up fully), and Leadership.

A note on informatics:

  • Aim for optimal outcomes by using information technology correctly in every interaction with patients ; think electronic health records directly in front of you during visits
  • Avoid duplicate documentation; make sure what you enter matches what verbal orders or read back processes require exactly
  • Safeguard patient privacy by using technology responsibly every time you log in or send data anywhere
  • Disclaimer: This description lists typical examples of work performed. It isn't designed as an exhaustive catalog of every duty or task someone in this role might do. Employees are expected to perform other related duties as assigned by their supervisor.
