The Work You'll Do

As an RN Resident, you're coordinating and delivering high quality, patient centered care. You'll collaborate with providers and the care team to provide individualized care using models like "Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage." A big part of the job is acting as an advocate for patients and their families to support their experience.

A typical day involves a mix of tasks:

  • Assessing patient condition during admission and each scheduled shift; you're identifying and reporting any changes in status.
  • Performing procedures, monitoring, or other functions ordered by medical providers.
  • Documenting all care in the patient medical record thoroughly and in a timely way.
  • Administering prescribed medications and monitoring for therapeutic response. If there's an unintended reaction, you notify the provider and intervene appropriately.
  • Responding promptly to patient requests and proactively trying to resolve needs before they become issues. Teaching patients, families, and caregivers about medical conditions, status, treatment plans, medications with possible side effects, and follow up care. You’ll translate complex medical terms so everything is completely understood.
