Respiratory Therapist
About This Role
What you'll actually do here
You'll work with patients who need respiratory care, from diagnostics to treatment. This isn't a behind the scenes gig ; you're right there with the patient and the care team.
- Assess patients thoroughly: breath sounds, airway patency, cuff pressure ; and document everything
- Run diagnostic procedures to figure out what kind of respiratory therapy people need and how they're responding
- Deliver therapies like oxygen, aerosol medication, and chest physiotherapy
- Help place artificial airways when needed
- Start up and manage mechanical ventilation, both invasive and noninvasive
- Keep an eye on how patients are responding to treatment
- If something goes sideways, you're the one who notifies the provider and jumps in
- Transport ventilator dependent patients safely
- Handle emergencies ; maintain airway integrity and keep people breathing during resuscitation
What you need to bring
Here's the real list. No fluff.
- An Associate Degree (that's the minimum)
- Your Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the NBRC
- An active state Respiratory Therapist/Practitioner license
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) ; you've got 60 months from your start date to get it
- Neonate Resuscitation certification ; same deal, 60 months from when you start
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) ; also within 60 months of your start date
- NICU experience is preferred, but not required
Schedule and pay
The original posting doesn't specify hours or a pay range, so I won't make anything up. What I can tell you is this is a full time gig at a hospital that expects you to handle real responsibility. Ask about specifics during your interview.
