Vascular Sonographer

OhioHealth·Columbus, OH

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this Vascular Sonographer job in Columbus, OH. It's a technical role with a lot of moving parts, and it's definitely not for someone who just wants to push buttons. You're the expert in the room, making critical calls that directly affect patient care.

What you'll be doing

Your main focus is performing a wide range of non invasive vascular diagnostic exams. You're not just following a script; you're independently evaluating normal versus abnormal results, correlating them with patient history and other data, and giving preliminary findings to physicians and surgeons. The list of procedures you'll handle is pretty comprehensive.

  • Extracranial Carotid Duplex exams.
  • Ankle/Brachial Indices and Segmental Doppler Pressures for the arms and legs.
  • Arterial and Venous Duplex exams of the extremities, sometimes with specific maneuvers.
  • Doppler Venous Waveform Analysis to check for venous insufficiency.
  • Duplex exams for Hemodialysis Access Sites, like AV Fistulas and Grafts.
  • Venous mapping for pre surgical planning.
  • Renal vasculature duplex exams, looking at arteries, veins, and flow.
  • Mesenteric Artery studies.
  • Aorta, Inferior Vena Cava, and Arterial Bypass Graft evaluations.
  • Providing sonographic guidance for vascular access or needle placement in outpatient, inpatient, or surgical settings.

A big part of the job is using your own judgment. You'll analyze data against established protocols to generate preliminary reports that give doctors what they need for treatment plans. Sometimes you'll modify exam protocols on the fly to fully evaluate a disease process. You're also expected to help keep things running smoothly by collaborating with other departments to get exams done efficiently without disrupting hospital operations.

The teaching piece

This isn't just a solo gig. You'll be responsible for training new Associate Technologists and students in vascular technology. That means walking them through anatomy and physiology as it relates to each patient's case, getting them familiar with equipment operation and testing protocols, and instructing them on how to interpret procedures and draft preliminary reports. You'll also help with proper documentation and assist them during their training. On top of that, you'll develop and present formal in service sessions for technical staff, nurses, and doctors on vascular procedures; covering techniques, indications, benefits, limitations; the whole deal.

The specifics we need from you

  • A Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) credential through ARDMS is required before your start date; we can't make exceptions here.
  • A minimum of two years' experience working full time as a Vascular Sonographer is mandatory.
