About This Role
The Role
This is a Sonographer position with OhioHealth in Columbus, OH. You'll work independently performing ultrasound exams and looking for any pathology that shows up based on a patient's symptoms, medical history, or past test results. After the exam, you review what you found with the radiologist so a diagnosis can be made. It's a job where your judgment matters daily.
What You'll Actually Do
About 60% of your time goes to performing various ultrasound examinations. You subjectively interpret information on the fly ; that takes deep knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology. You need complete understanding of wave form physics: time gain compensation curves, attenuation factors, all the variables you set to get proper images of specific anatomy. You'll also assist radiologists during invasive procedures.
Another 10% is independent evaluation ; comparing normal versus abnormal test results against patient history, previous exams, lab results, and more. And another 10% involves giving preliminary ultrasound results directly to attending physicians, surgeons, residents, and others for vascular procedures (as determined by site accreditation).
Teaching comes next: 10% of your time goes to educating imaging students, medical students, and residents on basic scanning methods and how the instrumentation works.
The remaining 10% covers maintaining equipment and restocking supplies. You perform quality control procedures and keep documentation in order.
What You Need
- An Associate's Degree (required)
- ARDMS certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
- ARRT certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists
- BLS certification from the American Heart Association
- RDMS credential as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer through ARDMS
- 1 2 years of ultrasound training from an accredited training program
- A passed ABD or OB/GYN exam plus physics/instrumentation through ARDMS
