Paramedic

OhioHealth·Columbus, OH

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this Paramedic role in the Emergency Department at Columbus, OH.

You'll be working under the direct supervision of an RN, but you're bringing your full paramedic scope to the floor. It's a mix of hands on patient care, managing clinical systems, and keeping the department running. The schedule is nights, 36 hours a week.

What you'll be doing

  • Your main focus is direct patient care. That means taking vitals and weights, helping with admissions and transfers, and getting patients ready for physician evaluation.
  • You're responsible for procedures like performing EKGs, initiating peripheral IVs per protocol, drawing blood from those lines, and discontinuing them. You'll also assist physicians with suturing and manage wound care with sterile dressings.
  • Responding to code assists and performing CPR when needed is part of the job.
  • You'll handle oxygen therapy per orders, help patients with activities and positioning, apply orthopedic equipment, bandages, and compresses as directed.
  • Transferring patients safely all over the medical center for testing or admission is a key task. You'll also manage Foley catheters to straight drain and provide postmortem care.
  • A big part of your day involves the Clinical Information System: entering orders and patient info, retrieving data, and communicating with other departments via phone as directed.
  • You’ll help prep and send lab specimens and assist with general data collection. All your interventions and patient responses need to be documented properly.
  • On the logistics side, you’ll locate, clean, and organize EMS and code equipment. Getting that gear ready for shipping and keeping records is part of it.
  • Restocking patient care areas, cleaning ED equipment, identifying items that need repair; you’ll handle it. That includes initiating work orders and delivering equipment to Plant Operations.

A couple important boundaries: you won't be monitoring or administering any medications (other than normal saline) by any route. Triage duties are also not part of this role.

What you need to have

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • You must hold your State of Ohio EMT P licensure.
  • National certification as a Paramedic through the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians is required.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification is mandatory.

PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) or BTLS (Basic Trauma Life Support) certifications are optional but a plus if you have them.
