Medical Lab Technician

OhioHealth·Columbus, OH

About This Role

What You’ll Be Doing

This is a cytology role with real responsibility. You’ll examine gynecologic specimens under the microscope, assess whether each sample is adequate, and mark any abnormal findings you spot. For negative gynecologic cases, you’ll finalize the patient report yourself. On the non gyn side, you’ll evaluate and review those specimens too.

About 80% of your time goes to independent microscopic work. That includes entering results into the computer for reporting. The other parts of your day shift around: you might assist pathologists and physicians during fine needle aspirations in different clinical settings, using your judgment to prep those medically significant samples the best way possible. You’ll also answer questions from doctors and nursing staff about patient results, run correlation studies when cytology and histology findings don’t match up, and keep documentation of those reviews.

Because this field changes fast ; new technology, shifting terminology, more government regulations ; staying current matters. Expect to attend meetings and seminars for continuing education. And you’ll serve as a teacher sometimes, training new personnel or providing information to other hospital staff.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science (required)
  • Certification as a CT (ASCP), SCAT (ASCP), or CT (CMIAC) ; or membership in CMIAC plus ASCP credentials
  • Or a Bachelor of Science in one of those sciences plus graduation from a CAHEA approved school of Cytotechnology ; then passing a certifying exam within one year of hire
  • State of Ohio SCT certification is also required

Schedule & Hours

The shift is day hours. Scheduled weekly hours are 40.
