
About This Role
What you'll actually be doing
You're a Field Service Technician working with Johnson Controls' Data Center Solutions group ; Silent Aire. This isn't a desk job. You'll be out in Columbus, OH and beyond, commissioning equipment and handling after sales service on custom cooling systems for data centers. You'll work mostly on your own, making decisions as you go, but you'll also back up the other JCI/Silent Aire techs on job sites when they need a hand.
- Check in with your Manager after every workday in the field. No exceptions.
- Fill out all company forms completely, either during each job or at the end of the day.
- Complete whatever tasks are scheduled for you that day.
- Check in with the client at the start and end of every day, and get their signature on forms where that applies.
- Use the plant's time clocks or the ADP app when you're in the field to log your hours.
- Turn in all paperwork in sequential order at the end of each trip.
- Make sure every receipt or expense invoice has a job number and goes to the right person.
- List and document any excess materials left over from each job.
- Train and support any Level 1 Field Service Technicians you work with.
- Answer office emails and calls quickly.
- Check in regularly so your Manager or Field Supervisor always knows where you stand.
- Secure parts and tools for various jobs throughout the day.
- Report any warranty repairs to your Manager or Field Supervisor, including whatever info the plant needs if it's a Silent Aire internal issue.
- Ask your Manager or Field Supervisor if you're ever unsure about something.
- Follow every company policy and lead by example.
- Respect and stick to the non disclosure policies, on the job site and off.
- Keep all your safety equipment in good shape at all times.
What you need to bring
This role requires some specific credentials and real know how. Here's what you've got to have.
- A high school diploma or equivalent GED.
- A current registered apprenticeship in Electrical or HVAC.
- Willingness to travel up to 70% of the time.
- A full understanding of basic electrical and control systems ; how electricity works and how air is treated to control temperature, humidity, and distribution.
- General knowledge of HVAC and mechanical systems.
- Ability to tell 3 phase wiring from single phase wiring.
- Understanding of parallel and series circuits.
- Knowledge of OHMS Law and the ability to use a multi meter to read voltage and resistance values.
- The ability to read and work from mechanical drawings.
- The ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
- A valid passport and a valid driver's license.
- The aptitude and communication skills to work independently.
- Technical knowledge of industry and design construction codes and standards.
- Proven planning, organizational, problem solving, and decision making skills, plus a practical aptitude.
- The ability to lift 40 pounds and use ladders while working from heights.
- Experience working in industrial or manufacturing facilities or field environments.
- Basic knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
It would be even better if you're a registered refrigeration or HVAC tech, a controls tech, an Electrician Journeyman, or a related tradesperson. Experience in highly sensitive or mission critical facilities is also a big plus.

- You'll need to drive to local job sites in Columbus, OH.
- On call and overtime hours will be part of it.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required on every job.
- You must be able to pass a DOD background check, which requires proof of US Citizenship.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to customer locations.
- This is classified as a safety sensitive position.
- A company uniform is required.
- Good hygiene and cleanliness are non negotiable at all times.
Pay and benefits
Hourly range for this role in Columbus, OH is $25.50 to $34.10. Your actual rate will depend on your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, plus internal equity and market data. This position also includes a commission structure.
