About This Role
Okay, let's talk about this lab manager job in Columbus, OH. I've been placing people in healthcare leadership for over a decade, and this is one of those roles where you're the anchor for an entire department. You're not just managing a team; you're the operational and strategic point person for laboratory services at the hospital. It's a big job, but if you like connecting daily operations to the bigger picture, this is it.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll run the lab. That means you own everything from the daily workflow and your team's performance to making sure we're hitting our financial and quality goals. You're the main link between the lab staff, hospital leadership, and our system wide OhioHealth Lab team.
- Oversee all daily lab operations. You'll figure out the best way to use your staff and equipment to keep things running smoothly and efficiently.
- Your technical duties are crucial. You'll set up procedures and policies, working with other campuses to standardize practices across OhioHealth. A huge part of this is ensuring we meet all regulations from agencies like CAP, CLIA, The Joint Commission, OSHA, and CMS.
- Work directly with nurses, doctors, and other departments. You'll be in management meetings and on hospital committees to make sure lab services are fully integrated into patient care.
- Build and lead your team. You'll handle hiring, training, and mentoring. Addressing personnel issues and developing staff for future roles is a key part of keeping the lab productive.
- Manage the budget. You'll develop operating and capital budgets, justify the needs, and be accountable for the site's financial performance.
- Track performance using a balanced scorecard that covers customer service, quality, physician/staff satisfaction, and finances. You'll create action plans to fix any gaps and report metrics up to system leadership.
- Serve as the campus voice for lab services in system wide planning for things like new instruments, regulatory compliance, and strategic initiatives.
The specifics of "other duties" can vary by site. Sometimes you might need to step in and help with staffing to maintain service levels. And because we're a High Reliability Organization (HRO), a constant focus on safety, quality, and efficiency is built into everything you do.
What You Need to Bring
We need someone who knows labs inside out; both the science and the business of running them.
- A Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a related science field is required.
- You must have completed Medical Technology Certification (ASCP or equivalent).
- This isn't your first leadership role. We need at least 5 years of management experience in a diverse laboratory setting within a hospital.
- Your knowledge has to span multiple lab areas; familiarity with both Anatomic Pathology (like tissue analysis) and Clinical Pathology (like blood tests) is essential.
- You should know process improvement methods like Lean or Six Sigma.
- The role requires advanced management skills; you've prepared business cases before handled strategic planning goal deployment budgeting
