The Job
Abbott Laboratories needs a Chemist for their plant in Columbus, OH. This is in the Abbott Nutrition division, the same place where brands like Similac, PediaSure, and Ensure are made. It's a big deal ; this facility is Abbott's first manufacturing plant in the world. You'd be working 2nd shift.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
You'll run analytical testing on both in process and finished products. Expect to use High Performance Liquid Chromatography for vitamin analysis, Kjeltec for protein, ICP OES for minerals, and Gas Chromatography for fatty acid profiles. You'll also do fat extraction using the Mojonnier method, total solids determination, and testing for iodide, chloride, choline, and physical stability.
Ingredient analysis is part of this too ; titrations, moisture testing, organoleptic testing, sediment checks, and peroxide levels. You'll handle ELISA and Romer allergen testing as needed by sanitation procedures. There's control sample analysis to validate test results plus water testing for minerals and volatile organic contaminants. Clean in place (CIP) residual testing? Yes. Compressed gases tested for moisture and hydrocarbons? Also yes. Daily flavor and aroma checks on oils with weekly peroxide testing of those same oils rounds things out.

- Help with compliance measures including Laboratory Investigation Reports
- Assist FLLs with non conformance investigations and root cause analysis
- Follow all Environmental Health and Safety measures including monthly behavior based safety observations
Instrument Support & Communication
You need solid ability to support instrument issues ; that means knowing how to communicate active problems or potential ones before they become bigger headaches. You'll assess day to day operations against schedule expectations and elevate concerns when needed.
Understanding shift needs matters here: releases coming up? Potential corrections needed? Instrument issues happening? You've got to communicate those clearly with lab team members AND across the plant processing teams plus filling line teams.
Training & Team Guidance
You'll create training plans for new hires yourself ; not just hand them off but actually design them then delegate trainers as appropriate. And you need to be proficient enough on all lab methods to train new hires directly.
- Provide guidance on day to day operations for Chem I and Chem II employees throughout your shift
- Act as shift liaison when FLLs escalate issues but the supervisor isn't available
- Serving as a resource people can count on during off hours
The Qualifications They're Looking For
A minimum of 1 year of college science coursework ; any science at an appropriate level counts toward this along with 1 year of college math (algebra geometry or calculus qualifies). Or an equivalent combination of education plus relevant work experience if that fits better.
