About This Role
Alright, let's talk about the job. It's for an Auto Body Technician at Gerber Collision & Glass in Columbus, OH. I've been doing this long enough to know what makes a shop run well, and it comes down to the people on the floor who can actually do the work. If you're someone who takes pride in putting a car back together right, this might be your spot.
What You'll Be Doing
The core of it is restoring vehicles to their pre accident condition. You're the one making it happen. That means a full teardown, repair, and reassembly for every job that comes in.
- You plan the necessary repair work and prepare cost estimates.
- Using all the tools of the trade; cutting guns, plasma cutters, hydraulic jacks, hammers, pliers; to fix vehicle sections.
- Repairing dents and minor damage; mixing and applying filler resins when needed.
- Realigning car chassis and frames to fix structural issues.
- Removing damaged sections and replacing them with new or aftermarket parts.
- Replacing or repairing glass, windshields, and interior components.
- Welding and fitting parts into place.
- Prepping vehicles and repainting them with factory specified or agreed upon paint.
- Aiming to complete work within the labor time guidelines we have.
- The final check is on you too; inspecting vehicles after repair to ensure everything's been done correctly.
The Background We Need
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. For experience, we need one of two paths: you've either successfully completed a technical school program for this work, or you've finished a 3 year apprenticeship as an auto body repairer.
The Skills That Matter Here
- You can read a job order and work with very little supervision once you know what's up.
- Being able to work alongside other repairers in the shop is non negotiable; it's a team effort.
- A thorough understanding of vehicle body repair methods and procedures is essential.
- Same goes for knowing how to use all the tools this trade requires. You should be comfortable with them.
A Few Other Realities of the Job
The shop floor isn't a quiet office. It's a noisy area with various odors present, so you need to be able to work safely in that environment. The job has physical demands: lifting up to 30 pounds at times, bending, stretching, kneeling, and squatting to perform repairs and inspections. You also need to be able to visually inspect vehicle damage in all kinds of weather conditions.
The Good Stuff (Benefits)
- Annual Paid Time Off plans so you can take a break when you need it.
