Accountant

Wallick Communities·Columbus, OH

About This Role

The Role

Wallick Communities is an employee owned company, which means the people who work here literally own the place. We've been at this for over 55 years, building and managing affordable housing and assisted living communities across the Midwest. We're about 1,000 associates strong, and our mission is simple: open doors to homes, opportunity, and hope.

We need a Property Accountant in Columbus, OH to own the financial reporting for a portfolio of our communities. You'll be the person who makes sure the numbers tell the real story ; for the properties, for our residents, and for the people who invest in them.

What You'll Actually Do

You'll take charge of the financial statements for roughly 30 sites each month. That means recording journal entries, reconciling bank accounts, and keeping every balance sheet account in check. You'll review income statements to make sure they follow GAAP and HUD standards, and you'll dig into any variances that don't add up.

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting for lenders, syndicators, investors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Work with outside partners ; lenders, investors, government agencies, auditors ; to answer their questions and provide what they need.
  • Review audits and tax returns for your assigned sites.
  • Help with the annual budgeting process.
  • Assist with more complex transactions like acquisitions, refinances, casualty losses, and sales.
  • Jump in on projects that tighten up internal controls or make things run more efficiently.
  • Learn the ins and outs of HUD, RD, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Make sure tax payments and other annual items are handled correctly, and verify the accuracy of accruals.
  • Oversee any interns who join the team.
  • Handle other related duties as they come up.

What You Need to Bring

First, a bachelor's degree in accounting or real estate. Or if you don't have the degree, at least 5 years of direct experience in this kind of role. No shortcuts here.

  • You can record journal entries and evaluate financial statements for accuracy ; that's non negotiable.
  • You know your way around Excel at an intermediate level.
  • You have basic knowledge of HUD, tax credit, and public housing laws and regulations.
  • You understand construction accounting and affordable/senior living development accounting.
  • You're comfortable with ownership structures and financial modeling.
  • You can analyze financial results and write commentary on variances.
  • You can read and analyze financial reports and other accounting data.
  • You respond to questions from property managers and internal stakeholders without needing a translator.
  • You can communicate clearly with lenders, investors, auditors, and government folks.

As for certifications ; we're not requiring one right now. But if you're willing to pursue an MBA, Masters, CPA, CGMA, or another relevant certification, that's something we support. It opens doors for growth inside the company.

This is an office based role in Columbus, OH. You'll be at a desk with a computer, keyboard, and mouse for most of the day. Some walking, talking, seeing, and hearing is part of the job. Occasional travel might come up. The office has moderate noise levels ; it's a place where people actually work, not a library.

Compensation & Benefits

You get paid time off, including paid parental leave. There's a gym membership reimbursement, a 401K, and tuition reimbursement if you want to keep learning.
