About This Role

The Gig

This is a Service Technician role with Patterson, working out of their Chicago, IL location. You'd be on the Dental Service team, which means you're the person who shows up to install and fix the equipment dentists rely on every day. It's a hands on job where you learn the trade from people who know it cold. After training, you work independently, but you're never totally on your own.

You'll start by handling basic installs and basic repairs on dental gear, including stuff that involves computers. Over time, there's room to grow into more complex work. Patterson puts real weight on safety and cleanliness, so you'd follow specific checklists, apply OSHA rules, and stick to manufacturer and company guidelines on asepsis. You might also get asked to do other tasks as they come up.

On the customer side, it's about being respectful, following up, and building relationships. You're the face of Patterson when you walk through a client's door.

What You Bring

You need a high school diploma or equivalent. That's the baseline. The bigger thing is mechanical aptitude ; maybe you've worked with carpentry, plumbing, heating, electronics, or something similar. It doesn't have to be a formal job; hands on experience counts.

  • You're comfortable with basic computer skills and using a smartphone or tablet.
  • You handle inventory ; figuring out what parts or tools you need for a job and restocking your vehicle after.
  • You need a clean driving record to drive a company vehicle.
  • Trade school training in carpentry, plumbing, heating, or electronics is a strong preference.
  • Good organization and problem solving skills.
  • A solid work ethic.
  • Knowing Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Teams helps, but it's not a must.
  • You communicate clearly, both in writing and out loud.
  • You show a sense of urgency while following Patterson's code of ethics and business conduct.
  • Customer service and interpersonal skills matter ; you'll be the person they see.

The Physical Part

This job is physical. Here's what it looks like:

  • You're in a stationary position or driving up to 100% of the day.
  • Lifting boxes and dental supplies weighing 1 to 25 pounds happens up to 75% of the day.
  • You'll position yourself to install or maintain equipment, including under cabinets, up to 50% of the day.
  • Reaching at shoulder or waist level is about 25% of the day.
  • Moving or lifting stuff from 26 to 49 pounds happens up to 10% of the day.
  • Getting dental equipment weighing 50 pounds into place is less than 5% of the day.
  • Climbing steps or ladders is less than 5% of the day.

Travel and Schedule

You travel 100% to customer sites in a local geographic area. Occasionally, you might head out of town for overnight or after hours work.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this role is $20.91 to $27.16 per hour. The final offer could go higher based on where you live, your experience, and your skills.
