About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this job. It's not what you might think from the name. This is a vehicle glass repair technician role with Safelite in Chicago, IL. You're not working in a hospital; you're fixing chips and cracks in windshields out in the field or in a shop. If you like working with your hands, learning a skilled trade, and don't mind being on your feet, this could be a solid fit.
What you'd be doing
You'll start with paid training, both in the classroom and hands on, to learn how to repair auto glass the Safelite way. Once you're trained up, your main focus is fixing those windshield chips and cracks for customers.
- You manage each job from start to finish using a company issued handheld device for work orders and customer info.
- A big part of the day is spent safely operating company vehicles and using specific tools and chemicals for repairs.
- While a customer waits, you'll clean their vehicle's interior around your work area.
- Keeping your workspace, company vehicle, and shop area tidy is part of the routine.
- There's also an opportunity to promote and sell Safelite products directly to customers.
The schedule & physical side of things
This isn't a desk job. The schedule has set days but requires some flexibility on start and end times to meet customer needs. You've got to be comfortable with the physical demands.
- You'll be on your feet for long stretches, bending and twisting into tight spaces around vehicles.
- Regular lifting up to 25 pounds is part of it; sometimes you'll help another tech lift windshields that weigh between 26 and 50 pounds.
- The work happens outside in all sorts of weather conditions and temperatures.
- You need to be able to safely use various hand tools, power tools, and specific chemicals following our procedures.
What we need from you
A few non negotiables here. You must be at least 18 years old. A valid state driver's license is required because you'll be driving a company vehicle as part of your duties; that driving will be monitored via GPS and camera systems for safety. A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not an absolute deal breaker if everything else lines up.
The most important qualification is completing our paid on the job training program and earning your Safelite SafeTech™ certification. We teach you everything you need to know.
The practical stuff: skills & mindset
- Troubleshooting problems on your own or with the team is key. Things don't always go exactly by the book.
- You need solid people skills; a professional appearance (we provide uniforms), clear communication over the phone or through our devices, and a genuine desire to give good service.
- Reading technical directions in English and maintaining composure when things get busy or challenging are important parts of the role.
Pay & what you get
The weekly base pay starts at $19.75 an hour. Beyond that:
- All training is paid for by us. We provide every tool and resource necessary to do the job right. You get full support while learning this new trade from experienced technicians. And we encourage having a life outside of work; this isn't just about glass repairs; it's about building something worthwhile.
