Diesel Mechanic

US Foods, Inc.·Chicago, IL

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this job. It's for a Senior Overnight Diesel Mechanic in Chicago, IL. If you're the kind of person who can listen to a diesel engine and know exactly what it's trying to tell you, this might be your spot.

The Work

You'll be the one keeping our fleet safe and on the road. That means doing everything from preventative maintenance to full repairs. You're not just following a checklist; you're diagnosing problems, figuring out solutions, and getting it done right.

  • Troubleshoot, repair, and rebuild diesel equipment. We're talking tractors, trailers, reefers, bobtails, lift gates; the whole lineup.
  • Handle preventative maintenance to keep everything within DOT standards.
  • Use our fleet maintenance software on a tablet to document every repair and part you use.
  • Sometimes you'll get road calls. You'll coordinate with vendors or business partners to get drivers moving again, which could mean arranging an equipment swap.
  • A big part of this is mentoring other mechanics in the shop. They'll look to you for guidance.
  • Keeping your workspace clean and safe is non negotiable. You'll follow all workplace safety rules and government regulations.

The Schedule & Pay

This is an overnight shift: Sunday through Thursday nights. You're looking at 40 hours a week on that schedule.

The starting pay is $39.00 an hour. That's the base rate; your exact offer depends on your experience and skills. And yes, you get paid overtime when you work it.

What You Absolutely Need

Let's be clear about the must haves. If you don't have these, we can't move forward.

  • A solid five years of verifiable hands on experience as a heavy duty commercial diesel mechanic. We need to see it on your resume.
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • You need your own personal hand tools for the job.
  • You have to be brake certified (FMCSA compliant).
  • This job demands strong diagnostic skills using fleet software and the ability to work through problems on your own.
  • You've got to understand technical manuals and comply with EPA and OSHA regs in the shop.

The Physical Side of Things

This isn't a desk job. You'll be on your feet most of the time; standing, walking, bending, squatting. Lifting and carrying between 1 100 lbs happens frequently; handling over 100 lbs happens occasionally. You'll be climbing in and out of cabs and trailers, pushing hand trucks, and manipulating tools all shift long. Be ready for that.

Stuff That Will Make Us Say "Yes Please"

These aren't required, but if you have them, tell us.
