Medical Scribe

Charleston, SC

About This Role

Job Overview

This is a Medical Scribe position available in the Charleston, SC area. You'll work directly alongside physicians and other healthcare providers, documenting patient encounters in real time. The work environment is typically a busy clinic or hospital setting where accuracy and speed matter. It's a support role that keeps clinical workflows running smoothly, freeing up providers to focus on patient care rather than paperwork.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Clinical documentation. During exams, you record the patient's history, symptoms, physical findings, and the provider's assessment and plan into the electronic health record.
  • Chart preparation. Before appointments, you review past notes and lab results so the provider has context ready to go.
  • Procedure logging. When minor procedures happen ; sutures, joint injections, or skin biopsies ; you document exactly what was done and any follow up instructions.
  • Order entry assistance. Some doctors will dictate orders for labs or prescriptions while you enter them into the system under their supervision.
  • Clerical support. You might help with referral letters, prior authorization forms, or updating medication lists as directed by the physician.

Requirements

  • Scribe certification or training. Many employers prefer at least a scribe certification course (typically 4–8 weeks), though some provide on the job training for highly motivated candidates without it.
  • A solid grasp of medical terminology. You don't need to be a nurse or doctor, but you do need to know basic anatomy and common abbreviations used in clinical notes ; things like SOAP format and ICD 10 codes come up daily.
  • >50 WPM typing speed with high accuracy. This role moves fast; if you have to look at your keyboard while typing, it won't work well here. Realistic minimum is around 60+ WPM for most clinics in Charleston, SC.
  • The ability to multitask under pressure without losing composure. Sometimes three things happen at once ; the doctor is dictating while also answering a call about an abnormal lab value ; and you need to keep tracking both threads without asking for repetition after every sentence.
  • A reliable internet connection if remote work is an option;
