About This Role

The Role

City Year is an AmeriCorps program that works to keep students on track to graduate. Teams of AmeriCorps members serve in schools, helping students develop the skills and mindset they need to thrive. This is a paid, full time, entry level position in Cedar Rapids, IA.

What You'll Actually Do

As a City Year AmeriCorps member in Cedar Rapids, IA, you'll coach and mentor students in elementary, middle, or high school. Your focus is helping them with academics, attendance, and positive behavior at school. You'll track individual student progress and work alongside teachers during class instruction, in breakout spaces, and with other in class support.

Don't worry if you haven't done this before. City Year provides 2 to 4 weeks of training at the start of the year, and you'll have partner teachers and school staff guiding you the whole time.

Day to Day Responsibilities

  • Work with identified students one on one and in small groups
  • Develop literacy or math skills by varying activities based on each student's level, answering questions, and encouraging them to finish assignments
  • Create and carry out a behavior management system for students
  • Build students' interpersonal skills using proven strategies like learning, practicing, reflecting, and repeating
  • Collaborate with teachers and team members to collect, record, analyze, and monitor individual student progress ; you'll participate in regular reviews of student data entered into City Year's data system
  • Work with teachers to create a classroom space that's engaging, safe, and healthy
  • Support or run extended day and virtual programming before, during, and after school; this includes academic enrichment and intervention, homework help, recreation and student clubs, service learning, and leadership development
  • Create, support, or co lead events or programs that recognize and celebrate student growth in math, literacy, attendance, and behavior

City Year AmeriCorps members come from all kinds of backgrounds. If you want to build yourself up, give back, and are ready to change the world, this is for you.

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. (Authorization to work in the U.S. isn't enough. DACA status isn't eligible right now.)
  • You must be 17 to 25 years old by July 1, 2025
  • You need a GED or high school diploma, some college experience, or a college degree
  • You can't have served more than three terms in an AmeriCorps state or national program
  • You must agree to and complete a background check
  • You need to be able to start with City Year by July or August 2025 (exact start date varies by location)
