Sterile Processing Technician

About This Role

The Job

This is a Sterile Processing Technician role, but with a specific twist ; you'll be working directly in the OR as an SPD/OR Liaison for Boston Children's Hospital in Boston, MA. You're the bridge between the sterile processing department and the surgical team. It's a full time, Monday through Friday schedule from 2pm to 10:30pm. And there's an $8,500.00 sign on bonus attached.

What You'll Actually Do

You plan, organize, and oversee daily clinical and administrative operations for your assigned specialty surgical service. That means preparing the OR suite before surgery starts and making sure every instrument kit is ready before a case begins. Every day you'll meet with OR Specialty Coordinators at something called the Collaborative Daily Review, where you predict instrument needs up to five days out.

During cases you monitor flow constantly, tracking instrument needs in real time. When something additional or emergent pops up, you notify SPD personnel right away or figure out an alternative on the fly. You respond to problem calls from surgery when things go sideways.

  • Perform daily KPI audits ; case carts, room visits to spot OR issues, post case audits, kit audits
  • Analyze that data to find trends and operational problems in both the ORs and SPD
  • Coordinate priority instruments and turnarounds; if anything might delay a surgery start time, flag it for the surgical team
  • Process and clean equipment per manufacturer IFUs using proper protective gear
  • Make sure instrumentation is processed and available for next day cases as well as on call and weekend surgeries
  • Complete all documentation for inventory, equipment requests, and instrument sets
  • Work with coordinators on pick list updates and kit modifications so count sheets stay accurate
  • A physician comes to you with a kit update? You handle that too.

What You Need To Bring

A high school diploma or GED is required. An associate degree is preferred ; ideally in Sterile Processing or Surgical Technology.

You need at least three years of experience in Sterile Processing (five years is preferred). Leadership certification through IAHCSMM (CRCST) or CBSPD (CSPDT) is required. Certifications in SPD Leadership, Instrument Tech, or Endoscopy through a nationally recognized accreditation association are preferred but not mandatory.

The Pay & Benefits Package

The pay range posted here reflects what Boston Children's Hospital reasonably expects to offer at this time. Your actual base pay depends on your skills, experience level, education background, certifications held ; all those job related factors.

  • Flexible scheduling options because life happens
  • Health insurance that's actually affordable plus vision and dental plans too
  • Child care subsidies if you need them; student loan subsidies if that's where your money goes instead
  • A generous amount of paid time off ; we're talking vacation days plus holidays plus sick leave built right in
  • A 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan plus a Pension plan so retirement isn't just something other people do
  • Tuition reimbursement plus certain license and certification reimbursements if you want to keep growing professionally
  • Cell phone plan discounts because who doesn't use their phone these days?
  • T pass discounts to make getting into Boston, MA easier on your wallet
